A 24-year-old man has made his first court appearance following charges related to the attempted murder of a taxi driver in west Belfast earlier this year. According to BBC News, John-Jo Lynch, with an address at Springfield Road in Belfast, faced multiple serious charges at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

Lynch was charged with the attempted murder of Sean O'Reilly, who was shot twice while sitting in his vehicle in the Bell Steel Manor area on 23 February 2025. He also faced two separate counts of possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property.

During the court hearing, Lynch appeared dressed in a grey hoodie and indicated his understanding of the charges by nodding when they were put to him. A detective inspector provided evidence to the court, stating she was able to establish a connection between the defendant and the charges he faced.

The court heard arguments regarding Lynch's release on bail, but the judge determined that such a release would pose an unacceptable risk. The judge cited concerns about the likelihood of reoffending and the potential danger to public safety, particularly given the defendant's apparent access to weapons.

Lynch's arrest came in the early hours of Wednesday, following a public appeal for information issued by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. He is scheduled to return to Belfast Magistrates' Court on 19 November, when he will appear via videolink rather than in person.

The shooting of O'Reilly had previously prompted police to release CCTV images of a suspect as part of their investigation. Police had offered a £20,000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest in connection with the incident.
