A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of two bodies at a residential property in Blackburn. Lancashire Police officers found the deceased man and woman at the address on Hardman Street at approximately 08:20 BST, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed by police. While authorities declined to confirm their ages, neighbours described them as elderly residents of the area. A dedicated investigation team has been established to pursue CCTV analysis, door-to-door inquiries, and forensic examination of the scene.

This incident represents another serious crime investigation in the Blackburn area. In June 2025, three people were arrested following the death of Paul Scott, 37, at a property on Peridot Close, with those detained including a 24-year-old man and two women aged 42 and 21. Additionally, a separate investigation in April 2026 involved two arrests in connection with a death where a Home Office post-mortem determined the cause was a head injury.
What do investigators know so far?
Police remain in the early stages of establishing the circumstances and motivation behind the deaths. A spokesperson stated that detectives are working to determine a motive, though they have ruled out any broader risk to the public at this time. The crime scene will remain cordoned off for several days as forensic work continues. Officers have requested that anyone with relevant information contact them as the investigation progresses.

How has the community responded?
Local residents and officials have expressed shock at the discovery. Councillor Terri Mahmood told media outlets that
the community is in shockand that
the family is deeply, deeply upset, it's shocking to them. Mahmood emphasised that residents prefer to allow the police investigation to proceed without speculation about the circumstances.
The incident follows a February 2026 case in which a 75-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and subsequently further arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman died from a serious head injury, highlighting the ongoing nature of serious crime investigations in the town.
