Volunteer conservationists have successfully reintroduced endangered glowworms to a nature reserve in North Yorkshire for the first time in over 100 years. Female glowworms were observed shining across multiple weeks during summer 2026 at Nosterfield Nature Reserve following an ambitious but low-cost breeding and release programme that overcame the species' notorious difficulty in re-establishment.
The reintroduction effort, led by independent ecologist Peter Cooper and a team of volunteer "glow-getters", involved collecting a small number of glowworms from a local donor site, breeding them in captivity, and rearing hundreds of snail-eating larvae in a garden shed in Bristol. According to Cooper's own account, 480 larvae were reared in his flat and reintroduced, with the remainder kept to breed progeny for a 2026 release.
The larvae were transported north and first released at Nosterfield in 2024, but because glowworms take two years to reach the adult stage of their life cycle—where the flightless female produces light to attract feeble-flying, non-luminescent males—visible success did not emerge until summer 2026. Glow-worm adults in the UK are usually active from June to July, with larvae active longer from April to October.

How many glowworms have returned?
Volunteers counted up to 12 glowing females over successive weeks in summer 2026, a result Cooper described as a "huge relief" after six years of mastering the complexities of breeding and releasing glowworms. "It's a really great first indicator of initial success," Cooper said.
"We know that glowworms can live out their full life cycle at this site – there is great food and plenty of mating opportunity, and it makes all that time and effort worthwhile."
Simon Warwick, director of the Lower Ure Conservation Trust which manages the reserve, credited Cooper's dedication and the 80 volunteers who had adjusted habitat management and monitored emergence.
"We are very fortunate to have a lot of really knowledgable volunteers alongside our brilliant staff who are managing the land that allows the glowworms to re-establish itself in this landscape after an absence of more than 100 years. They are incredibly rare in the region and I can't tell you how excited the volunteers have been about it."

Why did glowworms disappear from Britain?
Glowworms, which are actually beetles rather than worms, have vanished from the British countryside in recent decades due to intensive farming, development, electric lighting, and what conservationists call "the cult of tidiness"—the removal of the rough, varied grassland habitats they require. A profusion of glowworms recorded in 1909 were described as "wont to hang out their fieldstar lamps … as if lit by the hands of fairy folk", while the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge famously referred to their "love torches".
At Nosterfield specifically, quarrying operations led to the species' local extinction. However, since 1997, when the Lower Ure Conservation Trust purchased its first 72 acres of disused quarry, the landscape has gradually transformed. The charity now manages nearly 600 acres of former quarry land restored to species-rich wetland and grassland on magnesian limestone, with booming bitterns and marsh harriers now inhabiting the site. The reserve is described as one of the best examples of wetland grassland in the north of England.

What happens next for the glowworm project?
This year, with support from glow-getter volunteers, Cooper has bred another 1,900 glowworm larvae scheduled for release at Nosterfield later in 2026. According to Cooper's recent statements, over 600 larvae hatched in late July after adults were collected from the donor site and paired in captivity, with plans for another collect-and-release process next year and ultimately four releases annually.
Certainty about a self-sustaining population will not arrive until 2030, when the offspring of this year's wild adult glowworms reach maturity and produce their own light displays. Cooper is developing formal standards and guidance for glowworm breeding and release, as well as appropriate habitat management protocols to ensure sites are suitable for the species to thrive.
Fundraising events organised by Cooper and friends have raised sufficient money to upgrade breeding facilities at Westbury, making it easier to captive-breed additional glowworms. Growing interest from other conservation groups in glowworm translocations and reintroductions has emerged, and national recording schemes are helping to identify where such projects would be most beneficial and where hidden populations may still survive.
"It will be wonderful to see this project grow bigger than me,"Cooper said.
