A 61-year-old man has been brought before the courts charged with murdering a woman who sustained stab wounds and subsequently died following a vehicle collision. According to BBC News, Clifford Foster appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court on Friday in connection with the death of Eleanor Barnfield, 47, who died in hospital after the incident on Coity Road in Bridgend on Monday.
Eleanor Barnfield was a mother of two who worked as a housing officer for Valleys to Coast. When emergency services attended the crash scene, they discovered she had sustained puncture wounds that were unrelated to the collision itself.

Foster, of Ger-y-Nant, was arrested on Tuesday morning at 01:00 BST at the Ger-y-Nant retirement housing complex, which is located close to where the crash occurred and where Eleanor worked. The arrest followed a substantial police operation involving specially trained firearms officers who engaged in a 12-hour standoff at the sheltered housing facility before Foster was taken into custody. Residents of the complex, which provides accommodation for people aged 60 and over, were evacuated during the operation.

When Foster appeared in court on Friday, he wore a grey tracksuit and used a crutch for mobility support. He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during the brief hearing.
What happened on the day of the incident?
Emergency responders were called to the crash on Coity Road at approximately 12:44 on Monday. A response unit arrived within seven minutes, with two additional ambulances providing further support at 13:07 and 13:13. The Welsh Ambulance Service later clarified that Eleanor did not drive herself to hospital due to ambulance wait times, contradicting claims that had circulated on social media.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Welsh Ambulance Service addressed what it described as "misleading rumours" and "contradictory" claims spreading online. The service said initial investigations were "unable to identify" any calls made from Eleanor's phone numbers. It stated that enquiries were ongoing to establish whether calls were received through other means. The service urged the public "not to speculate" about the circumstances.
What did Eleanor's family say?
In a tribute released following her death, Eleanor's family described her as the "kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world". They said:
She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.
What happens next?
Foster remains remanded in custody pending his next court appearance. He is scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on 26 October. Police have confirmed that the murder investigation is not being treated as a domestic incident and have asked the public "to not speculate about the circumstances" as court proceedings are now active.
