Labour has suspended the whip from MP Bayo Alaba following a newspaper report questioning whether he sought to dodge repayment of a government-backed Covid loan, triggering an internal party investigation. Alaba, who represents Southend East and Rochford, referred himself for review and now sits as an independent MP while the probe proceeds. Party officials stressed that the suspension does not, at this stage, indicate any finding of wrongdoing.

A Labour Party spokesperson confirmed the self-referral, stating:

Bayo Alaba MP has referred himself to the Labour Party so that these matters can be investigated in line with the party's rules.

The spokesperson added:

The Labour Party expects the highest standards from our elected representatives and we have robust processes in place to ensure those high standards are upheld.
We cannot comment further while the investigation is ongoing.

What triggered the investigation?

The Times newspaper reported allegations that Alaba tried to wind up one of his companies before settling a bounce back loan, one of two he had taken out during the pandemic. Bounce back loans, funded by taxpayers, provided sums ranging from £2,000 to £50,000 to help small and medium-sized firms cope with financial strain caused by lockdown restrictions.

Alaba has confirmed he took out two such loans but rejected any suggestion that he attempted to escape his repayment responsibilities. He has indicated a belief that both loans will be fully repaid by the close of the year. According to The Independent, Alaba is now in the process of repaying both bounce back loans.

What do Companies House records show?

Alaba is listed as the co-owner of a firm named Alaba Properties. According to Companies House filings, an initial attempt to dissolve the company took place in March 2022 but was halted for reasons that were not disclosed. A second attempt to wind up the business followed and was similarly blocked in August 2022.

Does the suspension imply guilt?

Not according to Labour or outside reporting on the matter. The removal of the whip is being treated as a precautionary measure rather than a judgment on the outcome of the investigation, according to The Independent. Alaba himself addressed the situation directly, saying:

Like many businesses and entrepreneurs, I accessed financial support during the Covid-19 pandemic.
I am proud of my background as a small business owner, and of the work I have done since entering politics to support the business community, in part because I know just how difficult things can be.
There has been no attempt to avoid my financial obligations, and I am wholeheartedly committed to ensuring that the liability is met in full.
I've referred myself to the Labour Party's investigations process on the matter and I'll cooperate fully.

How has the opposition responded?

Conservative shadow Cabinet Office minister Mike Wood said the allegations raised serious concerns that Alaba must address. He stated:

These are concerning revelations and Alaba clearly has questions to answer.
Alaba needs to come clean about whether he tried to avoid paying his debts, and ministers should tell us if they had to intervene to stop it.

What happens next?

Labour has said the case will proceed through its established investigatory process, though no date has been set for a hearing or a final decision. Alaba remains an independent MP in the meantime, and his political future within the party will likely hinge on the outcome of that review.
