A 72-year-old woman remains in a critical condition at hospital after being involved in a two-vehicle collision on the A73 in South Lanarkshire on Thursday afternoon.
The crash occurred at approximately 13:40 near the junction with Sherifflats Road close to Thankerton village. A blue Honda CR-V and a white Volkswagen Golf were involved in the incident. The woman, who was travelling as a passenger in the Honda, was transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. The 72-year-old male driver of the Honda was also taken to hospital but has since been released.
The 34-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen received treatment at the scene. He was subsequently arrested by Police Scotland in connection with road traffic offences and has been released pending the outcome of further inquiries.
Emergency services closed the A73 while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence. The road remained shut for approximately ten hours, reopening at around 23:30 on Thursday evening.

Sergeant Gary Stewart of Police Scotland stated that the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is continuing.
Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to get in touch.
Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the collision.
