Ciaran Edward Murray, aged 30, has admitted to the killing of Montserrat Martorell, a 65-year-old Spanish national, during proceedings at Belfast Crown Court. The admission came in the form of a guilty plea to manslaughter, though prosecutors are continuing to pursue the more serious charge of murder in connection with the death.
The remains of Martorell were located in a ground-floor flat situated on Harvey Street in the Londonderry area on 24 August 2024. According to court reporting, firefighters discovered her body around 4.15am after extinguishing a blaze at the property. Murray, who resides at Malvern Terrace in the Waterside district of Londonderry, faces charges relating to both the death and the fire itself.
When the murder charge was formally presented to Murray during a video link appearance before the court on Friday, he responded by stating:
Not guilty, but guilty to manslaughter.The prosecution counsel subsequently informed the court that instructions had been received to continue pursuing the murder case despite the manslaughter plea.
What charges has the defendant faced?
In addition to the murder allegation, Murray entered a guilty plea to arson during the same court session. The arson charge relates to recklessly setting fire to a house of multiple occupancy on Harvey Street on 24 August 2024. This guilty plea was accepted by the court.

Defence counsel disclosed that Murray has a chromosome disorder currently under investigation, and a consultant clinical psychologist has been instructed to examine him in late October 2026.
