A search and rescue operation is underway following a helicopter crash in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand that claimed the aircraft carrying six people, including five pilgrims. According to BBC News, the helicopter went down near a village close to Joshimath in Chamoli district. Rescue teams have been deployed to the mountainous terrain, though the status of those aboard remains uncertain.

Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the incident, stating that the aircraft had departed from the Hindu pilgrimage site of Badrinath on Friday afternoon before losing radio contact.

I am continuously monitoring the entire incident,
Dhami said, adding that he had ordered the immediate airlifting of any seriously injured passengers for medical treatment.

According to NDTV, smoke was observed rising near Chaien village after the helicopter lost contact, though the wreckage had not been located in initial reports. The aircraft was operated by Trans Bharat Aviation and was reportedly headed for Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun, according to Pragati Vadi.

What caused the crash?

The precise cause of the crash remains undetermined. The incident occurred during a period of severe weather, with heavy rainfall and restricted visibility affecting the region. India's meteorological department had issued an orange alert for the area, warning of thunderstorms, hail and powerful wind gusts.

How are rescue efforts progressing?

A coordinated rescue operation has been mobilised involving the district administration, the disaster management department and the State Disaster Response Force. According to Economic Times, two additional helicopters were deployed to assist in locating the missing aircraft, though rain and poor visibility continued to hamper search operations. Authorities have prioritised the airlifting of any seriously injured survivors to medical facilities for emergency care.

Why are helicopter services used in this region?

Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state bordering China and Nepal, is home to some of Hinduism's most sacred temples and draws millions of pilgrims annually. Badrinath is one of four principal sites on the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, alongside Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Many devotees undertake arduous journeys through steep Himalayan valleys to reach these temples, which operate only seasonally due to severe winter weather.

Helicopter services have grown in popularity among pilgrims seeking to bypass difficult mountain routes. However, the safety record of these operations has come under increased scrutiny following multiple accidents in recent years.

What is the history of helicopter accidents in this area?

The Friday crash represents another tragedy in a troubling pattern. In June 2025, seven people died when a helicopter transporting pilgrims crashed near Kedarnath. Another seven perished in a separate crash on the same pilgrimage route in October 2022. Several additional helicopter accidents occurred during the 2025 pilgrimage season, prompting aviation authorities to strengthen safety protocols and impose restrictions on certain operations.

What happens next?

Authorities have committed to airlifting seriously injured passengers to higher medical centres for treatment. The investigation into the crash's cause is expected to proceed once rescue operations are completed and the wreckage is recovered.
