US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a new task force dedicated to artificial intelligence, to be headed by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton.
The task force, which Trump has named the "Super Intelligence Force," will focus on maintaining American technological leadership in AI development and will serve to coordinate how the federal government engages with the public on the subject, according to statements made by Trump on social media.
Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson and Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael have been appointed as additional members of the task force alongside Clayton.
Background to the announcement
The establishment of this task force follows Trump's earlier declaration that he would create a board to manage AI safety concerns. That announcement came after prominent technology executives signed what Trump characterized as a "morally binding" agreement aimed at regulating the technology.
On 30 September, Trump signed an executive order that formally changed the terminology used to describe the field. Rather than "artificial intelligence," the technology is now to be referred to as "super intelligence." Trump had previously explained that he considered the word "artificial" to be misleading, as it suggested the technology was not genuine.
Industry adoption of new terminology
The rebranding has already gained traction among certain technology sector leaders. Multi-billionaire Eoin Musk announced via social media that he would rebrand his company's AI platform, changing its name from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI to align with the new official terminology.
