Officials at Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, commonly known as the Brecon Beacons, have issued an urgent safety alert for Keepers Pond near Abergavenny following a dramatic drop in water levels that has uncovered hazardous objects beneath the surface. The popular swimming and water sports destination now poses serious risks to visitors, park authorities say, and entry to the water is strictly prohibited.
The sharp decline in water levels stems from an extended period of dry weather combined with the deliberate use of pond water to combat recent wildfires in the region. As water has receded, previously submerged objects and features have become exposed, creating unpredictable dangers for anyone attempting to swim or wade.
The pond holds protected status as a scheduled monument, which means its archaeological and historical integrity must be preserved. Park officials have stressed that visitors must not remove, disturb or interfere with any items or features that have been revealed by the falling water levels.
In a statement issued on social media, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park said:
"We ask that visitors respect the area and do not remove, disturb or interfere with any objects or features revealed by the low water levels."
The car park serving the beauty spot remains accessible to the public, but the national park has made clear that entry into the water is forbidden.
"For your own safety, you must not enter the water under any circumstances,"the authority stated.
The warning reflects a broader pattern of water-related safety concerns across Wales. River levels are approaching record lows across the country, with environmental authorities monitoring conditions closely as low rainfall and sustained heat continue to affect waterways, wildlife and farming operations. Similar precautions have been implemented at other popular water destinations; owners of Brombil Reservoir in Neath Port Talbot have also urged the public to avoid entering their site due to safety hazards and other concerns.
