A bus has collided with a tree after leaving the roadway in eastern France on Friday morning, resulting in what officials describe as multiple casualties. The incident took place in the town of Lent, situated north-east of Lyon, approximately 34 miles (55 kilometres) from the Swiss border. According to BBC News, emergency personnel and a helicopter have been mobilised to transport the most seriously injured to specialist medical facilities.

The crash occurred at approximately 07:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Friday. Yves Cristin, the town's mayor, informed French media that the bus "left the road and hit a tree in the ditch". Both the Ain prefecture and France's education minister confirmed the presence of multiple victims in the incident. Édouard Geffray, the education minister, disclosed that students were among those involved in the accident.

Geffray expressed his concern to reporters, stating his thoughts were with "students involved in the accident" and acknowledging that it was "always difficult when our children are victims of accidents of this nature". Philippe Tabarot, France's transport minister, announced he was travelling to the crash site to assess the situation.

According to Cristin's account to French media, two individuals were experiencing cardiac arrest at the time of the initial reports. The severity of injuries sustained by passengers prompted the deployment of helicopter evacuation services to transport the most critically injured to hospitals equipped to handle serious trauma cases.

The incident adds to a concerning pattern of serious transport accidents across Europe in recent months. A coach carrying 48 Dutch tourists overturned in the Swiss Alps on 11 September 2026, resulting in multiple fatalities and triggering a major rescue operation between Susch and Zernez in Graubünden. Additionally, a Polish tour bus carrying 57 passengers overturned on Hungary's M3 motorway on 16 August 2026, killing twelve people, with the driver suspected of falling asleep.

Emergency services remained at the scene as investigations into the cause of the Lent crash commenced. Authorities have not yet released comprehensive casualty figures, though officials have characterised the situation as involving multiple victims requiring urgent medical intervention.
