Bonnyton House, a care home in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, faces imminent closure after its local health authority terminated its contract, citing unresolved safety concerns. The facility, which can accommodate 14 residents but currently houses only two, is expected to shut within a month, putting 24 jobs at risk.
The Care Inspectorate issued an improvement notice to the home earlier in 2026 following a May inspection that identified serious deficiencies in health, safety and wellbeing. Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership (AHSCP) has now concluded that the home has not adequately addressed these issues and has cancelled its contract, preventing the placement of new residents at the facility.
What triggered the inspection concerns?
The Care Inspectorate's May 2026 inspection revealed multiple failings in how the service operated and was managed. Staffing levels were inadequate, with some employees lacking necessary knowledge, skills or appropriate training. Inspectors documented problems including residents not receiving regular bathing, inadequate health and safety checks, and concerns about food quality, preparation and handling practices.
According to reporting from a regional news outlet, the Care Inspectorate set specific improvement deadlines: 4 June 2026 for safety-related improvements and 6 July 2026 for staffing, care and training enhancements. The regulator warned that failure to meet these deadlines could result in cancellation of the home's registration.
What improvements were made?
Following the initial inspection, AHSCP provided intensive support to the home, including regular assurance visits, staff training, leadership support and, most recently, deploying an experienced manager to work full-time at the facility. The Care Inspectorate confirmed in a subsequent inspection that some evidence of improvement had been found.
However, this progress was deemed insufficient by AHSCP. Rachel Taylor, the partnership's interim manager, stated that while positive changes had occurred, the organisation's priority remained the safety, wellbeing and quality of care for residents.
We have therefore decided to end our contract with Bonnyton House and will not place any further residents there through the National Care Home Contract,Taylor said. She added that AHSCP had worked with residents and families to arrange alternative placements and would continue providing oversight while any remaining residents stayed at the home.

Obinna Tochukwu, who owns Bonnyton House, disputes the assessment that improvements have not been sustained. He contends that the facility has made substantial progress in addressing the initial concerns. Tochukwu explained that the home cannot admit new residents because of both the improvement notice and the now-cancelled contract, creating an impossible financial situation.
We have made huge improvements,Tochukwu said. He acknowledged that the home is unable to operate sustainably without new admissions and expressed frustration at what he characterised as excessive focus on negative aspects.
They are focusing so much on the negatives. There's no care home that is perfect. We are very, very close to letting staff go and closing the doors. This place will be closed in probably the next month.
What is the current status of residents?
The home's capacity of 14 residents has been substantially reduced. Only two people currently live at Bonnyton House after existing residents were offered and accepted alternative placements arranged by AHSCP. This dramatic reduction reflects the loss of confidence in the facility's ability to provide safe care.
What happens next?
AHSCP's contract termination process is underway. Taylor noted that any future commissioning decision regarding the home would need to be based on evidence and circumstances at that time, including the facility's regulatory standing and assurances about the safety, quality and sustainability of its care provision.
