A collection of vacant and underused structures in East Sussex has been converted into a £21 million contemporary health facility, marking a significant investment in local healthcare infrastructure.
Wellbeing Square in Newhaven, which consolidates primary care, community wellbeing and leisure services under one roof, held its official opening ceremony on Thursday. The initiative was spearheaded by Lewes District Council, which described the development as delivering "a high‑quality, modern healthcare environment that residents so richly deserve".
Lewes councillor Zoe Nicholson characterised the venue as a "major milestone in the history of the town". She added: "Not only is it transformational for people living in Newhaven but is also central to our wider regeneration plans."
The completed facility encompasses two contemporary GP practices, a new pharmacy, an expansion of Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre operated by Wave Active, and a space dedicated to creative work and co‑working arrangements.
The council's vision centres on establishing an environment where healthcare, wellbeing and community services operate in close proximity to one another. The two GP surgeries combined will serve approximately 15,000 residents in the area, with the site accommodating more than 5,500 appointments each month.
How will the hub improve access to healthcare?
The new facility is designed to make it simpler for residents to obtain support in their neighbourhood at times that suit them. Allison Cannon, chief nursing officer for NHS Sussex and Surrey, stated:
"This is exactly the kind of neighbourhood approach we want to see more of across Surrey and Sussex. It's where health services, local partners and communities come together to help people stay well, tackle health inequalities and support healthier lives."
Dr Paul Moore, a GP at Quayside Medical Practice, emphasised the importance of preventive health:
"We are encouraging people to be as healthy as they can."He noted that the new hub reinforces the message that
"your GP is there for you".
What is the background to this project?
The Newhaven Square redevelopment was approved in July 2023 as a health, wellbeing and cultural hub incorporating two GP surgeries, a creative hub, and leisure facilities, according to council planning documents. The project was originally anticipated to reach completion by autumn 2026, though specific reopening dates have since been confirmed by individual practices.
The former Co-op building at 10 Newhaven Square is being refurbished and remodelled for Quayside Medical Practice, according to the council's project page. The renovation includes additional consultation and clinical rooms, improved staff facilities, and new waiting areas and reception spaces.
What happens next?
Quayside Medical Practice will relocate to its new building at 10 Newhaven Square, closing on 26 August 2026 and reopening on 1 September 2026, according to the practice's relocation update. The new premises will open at 8:30am on that date.
