Alloa Mine Shaft Collapse Unrelated to Coalsnaughton Ground Movement, Says Mining Body

A mine shaft collapse near a car dealership on Clackmannan Road in Alloa has been ruled unrelated to the ongoing evacuation crisis in nearby Coalsnaughton, the Mining Remediation Authority says.

A mine shaft collapsed on land beside Clackmannan Road in Alloa on Monday, 17 August 2026, prompting a temporary road closure while the Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) secured the site. The authority has stated the incident is entirely separate from the ongoing ground movement crisis in Coalsnaughton, a former mining village roughly four miles away where dozens of families remain out of their homes.

What happened at the scene?

The exposed shaft was first spotted by Derek Hanna, a businessman whose car dealership sits on Clackmannan Road, after he found a large void roughly a metre from a portable cabin on his premises.

I left the garage on Saturday night at half past five and everything was fine.
I was in on Monday morning and I noticed there was a massive hole, so I got a ladder and had a look in, it was about five or six metres round.

Hanna said Clackmannanshire Council road crews reached the site within 20 minutes of being alerted, followed shortly by MRA staff.

because they were obviously on site in Coalsnaughton.
They took over, and within an hour the road was closed,

He added that the disruption forced him to relocate vehicles from his forecourt, though he praised the speed of the response.

I had to move my cars, but they were very quick in what they were doing.

Describing his own reaction to discovering the hole, Hanna said he was shaken by its scale rather than harmed.

got a fright more than anything else.
I didn't expect to see that size of hole, because it was roughly a metre from my Portakabin, so I phoned right away.
They got it under control, they were very professional.

How did authorities respond?

Officials moved quickly to contain the hazard, fencing the area and packing the collapsed section with stone to prevent further movement. According to a report by STV News, the affected stretch ran along the A907 between the Clackmannan roundabout and Hilton Road, and the closure was initially expected to remain in place until Tuesday while stabilisation work continued. Clackmannanshire Council, however, said the road had in fact reopened on Monday evening, suggesting the closure was resolved sooner than first anticipated.

An MRA spokesperson confirmed the authority had been alerted to the collapse on Monday and coordinated closely with police to secure the area.

Working closely with Police Scotland and other partners, we immediately fenced off the site to keep people safe and have filled the collapse with stone to stabilise the affected area.
We'd like to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident and it is completely unrelated to the incident we are dealing with at Coalsnaughton.

Is this linked to Coalsnaughton?

The MRA has been explicit in ruling out any connection between the Alloa collapse and the far larger crisis unfolding in Coalsnaughton, where ground movement tied to historic coal mining has forced residents from their homes since May 2026. A council update cited by Clackmannanshire Council put the number of evacuated properties at 97, spread across Benbuck View, Dunmoss View, Nechtan Drive and Langour, slightly higher than earlier reported figures of around 256 residents from four streets.

Separate reporting by STV News has indicated that parts of the Coalsnaughton neighbourhood have sunk by as much as 0.6 metres since 2018, a finding consistent with the MRA's own eight-week investigation, which concluded the cracking of roads, paths and homes stemmed from historical mining activity. The scale of that subsidence has previously been detailed in our earlier coverage, including a report that found part of the village had dropped nearly two feet in eight years, and accounts of residents fearing their homes could ultimately be demolished.

What happens next?

The MRA has said it will carry out further investigations into the exact cause of the Alloa collapse before designing a permanent repair.

We will carry out further investigations to determine the cause of the collapse, design a permanent treatment solution and carry out repair works as soon as we can.

Meanwhile, monitoring of the Coalsnaughton site is set to continue as authorities work through their separate, longer-running investigation, according to a council document reviewed by Clackmannanshire Council. Displaced Coalsnaughton residents remain without a confirmed return date as officials continue to assess the extent of the historic mining damage beneath the village.
