Mastermind 2026 Winner Announced
A woman from Lancashire has been declared the winner of Mastermind 2026. Diane Howe, a housewife and carer from Lancaster, was crowned champion following the final held on Monday on BBC Two.
She achieved victory by scoring 28 points, narrowly defeating her competitor Lorna Frankel by a single point after a dramatic grand final tie-break – an event that has occurred only twice in the programme’s 54-year history.
"It's just an amazing feeling. I'm so happy... and relieved," Diane said of her win. Describing the glass bowl trophy, she added: "It's very heavy - I don't want to drop it!"
Diane earned 12 points on her specialist subject, the US astronaut Jim Lovell, renowned for his role in Apollo 13. She also received a video message from British astronaut Tim Peake, who wished her "good luck and ad astra (to the stars)".
Background and Preparation
This series marked Diane's second time competing on Mastermind. She was previously eliminated in the first round in 2019, an experience she said motivated her to return and improve her performance.
"I really spurred me on to have another go and see what I could do," Diane said.

Diane has been a member of a pub quiz league for 35 years and has been a fan of Mastermind since childhood. In an interview with BBC Breakfast, she explained her preparation process, which involved revising 100 potential questions on her specialist subject by "reading and re-reading source material" and making notes on key points.
She chose Jim Lovell as her specialist subject shortly after his death last summer. Lovell is remembered for his leadership in safely guiding the Apollo 13 crew back to Earth following an onboard explosion in April 1970.
"I've always loved science fiction and loved Apollo 13, the film," Diane said. "He is an amazing man to do what he did and stay calm - the way he commanded that situation was amazing."
"It means everything to win it - to have the trophy in my hands, it is amazing."
Personal Life and Reactions
A thrill-seeker who has previously skydived, Diane commented on her approach to life:
"You only live once, so do things while you can."
Diane's husband, Dermot, expressed his pride in her achievement, describing himself as "extremely proud".
Mastermind Host Comments
Clive Myrie, the host of Mastermind, congratulated Diane on her narrow victory. He remarked on the tension during the final moments of the competition.
"Many congratulations to Diane, just pipping Lorna at the very end.
You could really feel the tension in the air as these two magnificent quizzers went toe-to-toe in what was a heartstopping tie-break.
I was on the edge of my seat in the studio, never mind the viewers at home!
It was a wonderful finale to a wonderful series."
