The Prince of Wales made an unexpected appearance on the Graham Norton Show during a special episode dedicated to the Earthshot Prize, drawing gasps from the studio audience. According to BBC News, the episode, which aired on Friday, featured the prince joining Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham—all of whom play significant roles in the environmental initiative.
As Norton discussed the prize with the three guests, he surprised viewers by inviting William to emerge and take a seat on the sofa alongside them. The conversation centred on balancing optimism with urgency in addressing climate change, a core theme of the Earthshot Prize, which William established to "celebrate and scale the solutions that will repair our planet".
Beyond environmental matters, the group also explored William's long-standing passion for Aston Villa football club and his appreciation for filmmaker Christopher Nolan's work, offering viewers insight into the prince's personal interests.
How did the Earthshot Prize begin?
William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020, drawing inspiration from US President John F Kennedy's Moonshot initiative, which set the ambitious goal of landing astronauts on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth. The prize operates across five categories, or Earthshots: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. Each winning initiative receives £1 million in funding.
The prince has committed to leading the prize through 2030. The Earthshot Prize has announced its 15 finalists for 2026, selected from nearly 7,000 nominations across 169 countries, with winners to be chosen from this cohort.
What happened at previous ceremonies?
The 2025 winners were unveiled at a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, where former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel and then-UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer attended. Pop stars Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes performed at the event. Among the 2025 winners was Lagos Fashion Week, recognised for "transforming one of the world's most wasteful industries" by requiring designers to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
At last year's ceremony, William stated that the winners represented "proof that progress is possible". Mumbai was announced as the 2026 host city during the inaugural Mumbai Climate Week, marking the prize's first visit to India.
What is the significance of the guest appearances?
Cate Blanchett serves as an Earthshot Prize Council member, Robert Irwin holds the position of global ambassador, and Hannah Waddingham hosted the 2023 awards ceremony. Their involvement underscores the prize's ability to attract high-profile figures committed to environmental action. William has emphasised that the Earthshot brings together innovators, investors and advocates, recognising that no individual or single initiative can tackle the climate crisis alone.
When will the next awards take place?
The Earthshot Prize Summit is scheduled for 16–17 November 2026 in Mumbai, with the Awards Night ceremony taking place on 17 November. Karan Johar has been confirmed as host of the 2026 Earthshot Prize Awards Night, bringing further international prominence to the event.
