Vertiv Announces Major Job Creation in North West

An engineering company specializing in equipment for data centres has revealed plans to create "at least 200 jobs" as part of a significant expansion in the north west region.

The new positions will be located at Vertiv's facilities in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, as well as Letterkenny and Burnfoot in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, over the next six months.

Vertiv stated that this expansion aims to address increasing global demand, particularly driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The company emphasized that the investment demonstrates strong confidence in the region's capabilities.

Speaking on BBC Radio Foyle's Mark Patterson Show on Thursday, Vertiv's delivery execution director Emmett Toland highlighted the urgency of hiring, stating there is "an immediate need" for 200 employees.

He added that this number could rise to several hundred later in the year, with approximately 60% of the roles expected to be based in Derry and the remainder in Donegal.

Toland described the investment as being worth millions of pounds and significant for the region's economic growth.

"We are offering both full-time and part-time roles, primarily it will be full-time, but it will be both, but we want to be able to reach out to as many people as possible.
It shows confidence in the people here, we know we have the skill here and the workforce, I have been ten years and it has been nothing but growth."

Vertiv has maintained operations on the island of Ireland since 2021 following its acquisition of E&I Engineering, a company founded by Derry native Philip O'Doherty.

The acquisition was strategic, as E&I Engineering's production of electrical switchgear and power distribution systems complemented Vertiv's existing business portfolio.

Data centres, which are essentially warehouses filled with computer servers, play a central role in supporting online business operations.

These facilities require a substantial and continuous electricity supply to power and cool the servers effectively.

A Range of Opportunities Available

In an official statement, Paul Ryan, president of Vertiv for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), underscored the strategic significance of this investment for both the company and the region.

"This expansion represents a major vote of confidence in the skilled workforce and business environment of the North West region," Ryan said.

Vertiv noted that demand for electrical switchgear systems has surged in line with the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing, which has increased pressure on the power infrastructure that supports digital services.

The new jobs will span manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, and support functions across Vertiv's three manufacturing sites in the region: Campsie in Derry, and Burnfoot and Letterkenny in County Donegal.

The majority of the positions will be for electricians, panel wirers, mechanical fitters, and general operators, with both full-time and part-time roles available.
