ITV is set to sell its media and entertainment divisions to Sky for £1.6 billion in a transaction that both companies assert will establish a formidable competitor to global streaming giants.

The agreement encompasses ITV's broadcast channels along with its ITVX streaming platform; however, the company's studio division is excluded from this deal.

This acquisition ranks among the largest in British media history. The American-owned Comcast, which owns Sky, initiated takeover discussions in November of the previous year.

Sky's chief executive, Dana Strong, described the deal as:

"a defining moment for British media"

In a statement, Sky Group elaborated on the evolving market dynamics:

"The UK media market is undergoing a profound and rapid transformation, and as competition for audiences intensifies, scale matters more than ever in order to compete with global streaming giants and YouTube in the UK,"

the statement read.
