Meta Announces Major Job Cuts as AI Investment Increases
Meta is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 8,000 employees next month as it intensifies investment in artificial intelligence (AI) projects. The company informed its staff in a memo on Thursday that it intends to cut 10% of its workforce and will also halt recruitment for thousands of open positions.
A significant factor behind these layoffs is Meta's escalating expenditure in various sectors, particularly AI, where it plans to spend $135 billion (£100 billion) this year. This amount is nearly equivalent to the total AI spending over the previous three years combined, according to an individual who reviewed the memo.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the planned job reductions but declined to provide additional comments.
CEO Comments on AI's Impact on Productivity and Workforce
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's co-founder and chief executive, had previously indicated in January that further job cuts were anticipated this year. He highlighted the increased productivity of employees utilizing AI tools, noting that tasks once requiring large teams can now be completed by a single individual.
"I think that 2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work,"
Zuckerberg's remarks underscore the company's strategic shift towards AI-driven efficiency.
Recent Reports and Employee Reactions
Last week, reported that Meta might reduce its workforce by more than 10,000 employees this year. The memo released on Thursday was initially reported by Bloomberg.
Although Meta has already executed two smaller rounds of layoffs this year, totaling around 2,000 employees, staff had anticipated a more substantial reduction, as previously reported by the BBC.
In recent months, Meta's focus and spending have shifted markedly towards advancing AI models and tools. This week, the company notified employees that it would begin monitoring and logging their interactions with work computers to aid in training and enhancing its AI models. One employee described this measure as "dystopian," especially in light of the impending layoffs.
"This company has become obsessed with AI,"
the employee told the BBC.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
Since 2022, Meta has implemented multiple rounds of job cuts, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of positions. However, the company resumed hiring, and by last year, its overall employee count appeared to return to levels seen before the initial layoffs.
The forthcoming job reductions represent Meta's largest layoff since 2023.
