£245m Funding Secured for Battery Storage Project in Borders
A £245 million funding package has been secured to support a significant battery energy storage system (BESS) project located near the Eccles substation in the Borders. Construction of the development began in November.
Matrix Renewables stated that this financing deal reflects the
"strong and growing demand for high-quality battery storage".
Community Concerns Over Multiple Projects
The increasing number of proposed schemes in the area has raised concerns among local communities about the industrialisation of what has traditionally been a largely rural landscape. The area around Eccles has become attractive to developers due to its proximity to the substation, which is currently undergoing expansion.
However, residents of Leitholm, a village situated between Coldstream and Greenlaw, have expressed worries that the essence of their community is being compromised by the growing number of projects.
Financial Backing and Operational Plans
The financing arrangement for the Matrix Renewables project has been underwritten by banking institutions CIBC, MUFG, and NatWest. The site is expected to commence operations next year in collaboration with energy company EDF.
Matrix Renewables highlighted the anticipated benefits of the project, stating it would
"drive local employment and stimulate local economic activity"during both the construction and operational phases.
Once operational, the Eccles BESS is projected to supply energy sufficient to meet the needs of approximately 270,000 homes.
Environmental and Community Engagement
The company emphasized that it has worked closely with various organisations and stakeholders to ensure the project adheres to
"strict environmental, technical and community standards".
Additionally, Matrix Renewables has signed a collaboration agreement with the local community council to develop initiatives aimed at benefiting local residents.
