Crowds began assembling in Mumbles as the late singer Bonnie Tyler made her final journey home ahead of a series of farewell events culminating in a celebration of life on 17 August 2026. The Total Eclipse of the Heart star died "unexpectedly" on 8 July 2026 at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal, prompting an outpouring of tributes from admirers and fellow artists alike.

Members of the public were asked to line the streets of Newton and Mumbles on Saturday afternoon to pay their respects, with some arriving outside her home earlier that morning. Among the first to gather was Angela Powell, who recalled a personal connection to the singer.
She was lovely - just like a friend you'd known all of your life.
My mam used to cut Gaynor's husband Bobbie's hair and so he would let her into the nightclubs [which he managed] in the town without having to queue.
She actually met my father in one of them, The Townsend, where Bonnie would regularly perform.
My father is unwell so my mam is home looking after him and can't be here, so I wanted to come on behalf of us all to thank her.
I've met her a few times - in Marks and Spencer and on a flight to Portugal.
Two other local women, Andrea Witts of Bryncoch and Maggie Phillips of Gorseinon, said they had grown up listening to Tyler's music and wanted to pay tribute in person.
Many years ago I worked in Skewen and taught her niece. The whole family were lovely. I would often bump into her in local shops and restaurants and was she was always lovely.
What is planned for the celebration of life?
A memorial service will take place at midday on 17 August 2026 at St Mary's Church in Swansea, followed by a private family committal in her hometown in Neath Port Talbot. According to a regional broadcaster's report, the cortege is expected to depart the church at around 1pm before arriving in Skewen roughly 20 minutes later, with the service itself expected to last about an hour according to a local news outlet.
For those unable to attend in person, the service will be broadcast online and shown on screens outside the church, according to a national broadcaster's report. A public screening has also been arranged in Swansea city centre at St David's Square, where a large screen will show the service, according to the same local news outlet report. Limited seating will also be available inside the church for members of the public, the national broadcaster's report noted.
How will the procession affect local roads?
The coffin is due to arrive at Tyler's Mumbles home on 15 August 2026 at 15:30 BST, with the public invited to line Newton Road from 15:15 BST, according to the national broadcaster's report. Newton Road is expected to close from around 3pm that day to allow the procession to pass safely, the local news outlet reported.
The funeral notice reportedly set out a route from Swansea passing along Fabian Way, Ashleigh Terrace, Jersey Marine, Pen-y-Heol, Burrows Road, Hen Heol, New Road, Siding Terrace, Park Avenue and Peniel Green Road, according to the local news outlet. A Book of Condolence has also been opened at Y Storfa on Oxford Street and will remain available until 24 August 2026, the same report said.
Who was Bonnie Tyler?
Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a council house in Neath and is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan. She was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell while performing in a Swansea club and released her debut single, Lost in France, in 1977.
Her country-pop ballad It's a Heartache, also released in 1977, reached number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Six years later, in 1983, her signature hit Total Eclipse of the Heart topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, making her the first Welsh artist to score a US number one single.
The song earned her a Grammy nomination, with two further nominations following for the album Faster Than the Speed of Night and the single Here She Comes. A funeral notice issued by William Pressdee Funeralcare on behalf of her family described her as "a warm, generous artist whose music touched generations and continues to fill dance floors and karaoke booths around the world."
