Actor Bella Ramsey, 22, has said they missed out on a typical rebellious teenage phase because they spent their formative years working alongside adults on Game of Thrones, which they joined at age 11. Ramsey, who uses they/them pronouns, plays a young cancer survivor in the new film Sunny Dancer, which finally gave them the chance to experience teenage freedom seven weeks late, at 21.
Ramsey explained that they had deliberately avoided moody, stereotypical teenage behaviour after absorbing criticism from adults around them at a young age.
I was like, I'm not going to be that.
Making Sunny Dancer, a story about a summer camp for young people affected by cancer, offered a delayed opportunity to embrace some of that freedom.
I got to be a teenager aged 21, which was brilliant. It was really nice - and liberating.
Reflecting on the experience, Ramsey said it left them questioning whether they had been too well-behaved the first time round.
I kind of wish that I had made the most of being a teenager and getting away with things and being a bit rebellious.
