Judd Trump progressed to the quarter-finals of the Shenzhen Open with a commanding 5-2 victory over Si Jiahui, extending his record of reaching the last eight in ranking events to 113 occasions across his career.
The English player constructed breaks of 80, 71, 53 and 54 during his win over the Chinese competitor, though his path to victory was momentarily disrupted by a technical malfunction affecting the LED advertising display positioned behind the table. After Si failed to pot the yellow ball in the seventh frame, Trump found his sightline obstructed as the screen flashed blue while he attempted to pocket the same ball into the top-right corner. Despite this distraction, he recovered his focus and completed the frame by clearing the remaining colours to secure the match.
At this stage there's always a crucial ball or crucial frame. So far this season and maybe last season I have not been winning those. But that can change at any point - you have just got to keep putting yourself in those positions.Trump reflected on his performance, acknowledging the importance of capitalising on pivotal moments in competitive snooker.
Selby advances with dominant display
Trump will now face Mark Selby in the quarter-finals after the four-time world champion secured a 5-3 victory over Stephen Maguire. Selby, who claimed the China Open title in August, compiled a top break of 99 in his win. According to the official snooker governing body, the third frame between Selby and Maguire proved particularly competitive, with the players combining for 178 points in a frame decided 91-87—just 17 points short of the frame scoring record.
The quarter-final between Trump and Selby is scheduled for Friday 2 October at 06:00 UTC.
Other last-16 results and quarter-final pairings
