World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open after determining that his right knee injury requires additional recovery time. The 25-year-old Italian announced the decision following recent training sessions in Monte Carlo, where he assessed his fitness ahead of the tournament.

"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,"
Sinner said in a statement.

Sinner has not competed in a match since claiming the Wimbledon title in July, when he overcame a foot injury to defend his championship. His absence from competitive play has extended through the summer months as he managed his recovery. He withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on 9 August, citing the same knee concern that now forces him to miss the US Open.

"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue."

Despite his competitive success, Sinner expressed emotional disappointment at missing the tournament.

"I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."

The withdrawal leaves the US Open without its world number one competitor. Alcaraz, the defending champion, has confirmed his return to competition at the tournament after recovering from a four-month wrist injury, positioning him as a leading contender in Sinner's absence. Alcaraz and Sinner faced each other in the US Open final 12 months ago, with the Spanish player claiming victory.
