Sonay Kartal strikes the tennis ball during her quarter-final match in Wuhan

Sonay Kartal's remarkable recovery from a six-month back injury reached a new milestone as she defeated fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2 2-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open. The 24-year-old British player, who has climbed from a ranking of 170 back towards the elite after suffering a stress fracture, will now face 2017 French Open champion Jeļena Ostapenko in her first WTA 1000 semi-final on Saturday, 17 October.

According to BBC Sport, Kartal's victory marked her sixth win in eight matches since returning to competition. Sky Sports reported that the win secured her first WTA 1000 semi-final appearance, making her only the second British player after Johanna Konta to reach this stage since the format's introduction in 2009.

Kartal's path through the tournament has been striking. She arrived in Wuhan having won five of her seven matches since returning from injury, and she extended that run by eliminating Italian 15th seed Jasmine Paolini and Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic in earlier rounds without dropping a set until facing Svitolina.

The Ukrainian player, ranked sixth in the world, proved a formidable opponent in the quarter-final. Kartal broke Svitolina's serve early in the opening set to establish control, but Svitolina called for a medical timeout to address treatment on her right arm. She responded by claiming the second set 6-2, forcing a decisive third.

In the final set, the two competitors remained closely matched until Kartal found the crucial break at 5-4, securing her passage to the semi-finals. Speaking on court immediately after the match, Kartal reflected on the difficulty of the contest.

"It was solid composure from me throughout," she said. "It's breaking new ground for me this week. I love playing here and on this court. The atmosphere was amazing, so big thank you to the crowd."

Kartal acknowledged the calibre of her opponent, noting that she "knew what a great fighter" Svitolina is and that she "was never safe" during the encounter. The British player competed using a protected injury ranking, a status that allows her to participate in tournaments while her ranking recovers from the extended absence.

How did Kartal's injury affect her ranking?

Before her back injury, Kartal had achieved a career-high ranking of 44 last summer. Prior to the injury, she had beaten top-20 opponents Madison Keys and Emma Navarro at Indian Wells before retiring against Elena Rybakina with the back problem. The stress fracture forced her to miss more than six months of competition, during which her ranking fell to 170. Her performances at Wuhan demonstrate a steady recovery, with each victory bringing her closer to the elite rankings she previously held.

What lies ahead for Kartal?

Kartal's semi-final opponent, Ostapenko, advanced by defeating 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 in a tense opening set. The Latvian champion will represent a significant test, though Kartal's recent form suggests she possesses the capability to compete at the highest level. The semi-final is scheduled for Saturday, 17 October.

In the other quarter-finals, Polish 16th seed Maja Chwalinska faces Greek Maria Sakkari, while American Ann Li takes on six-time Grand Slam winner and seventh seed Iga Swiatek.
