Kartal stuns Bencic to advance at Wuhan Open

Britain's Sonay Kartal delivered an upset victory against ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic at the Wuhan Open, continuing her impressive recovery from a lengthy injury layoff. The 24-year-old defeated the Swiss player 6-0 7-5 in a dominant performance that marked one of the most significant wins of her professional career.

Kartal's comeback has been remarkable given the setback she faced earlier in the year. A stress fracture in her back sustained in March forced her to miss three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, including Wimbledon, where she had reached the fourth round the previous year. Her ranking slipped from a career-high of 44, achieved following last year's Wimbledon, down to 170th in the world during her absence from competition.

The victory over Bencic, who is ranked 12th globally and reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last year, represents the second-biggest win by opponent ranking in Kartal's career. Her performance demonstrated that she has regained the form that made her a rising prospect on the women's tennis circuit before her injury.

Kartal returned to competitive action representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last month. Since then, she has shown steady progress, reaching the third round at the Beijing Open the previous week before defeating Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina in her opening match at Wuhan. Her victory over Bencic now marks her fourth win in five matches since returning to the WTA Tour.

Reflecting on her performance, Kartal acknowledged both her satisfaction with the result and her awareness of the challenges ahead.

I trusted that I would be able to get my level back, I just didn't know how quickly,
she said.
I did a lot of things right today but I still think there's a long way to go. I can produce the level, but can I sustain it? I think that's going to be the hardest challenge. I'm happy to be back, I'm feeling good.

Before her injury, Kartal had been in excellent form. She secured victories over American top-20 ranked players Emma Navarro and Madison Keys at Indian Wells, demonstrating her capability against elite opposition. However, her run was cut short when she retired from her third-round match against Elena Rybakina due to the back problem that would sideline her for six months.

What's next for Kartal?

Kartal will face either Italian 15th seed Jasmine Paolini or 20-year-old Czech player Nikola Bartunkova in the quarter-finals. Her progression through the tournament will provide further evidence of whether she can maintain the form that has characterised her return to competition.

In other action at the Wuhan Open, former world number one Iga Swiatek advanced with a commanding 6-2 6-1 victory over fellow Polish player Magdalena Frech, recording her 40th win of the season.
