Welcome to live coverage of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend in Malaysia following its postponement from April due to conflict in the Middle East. The ongoing situation in the region has forced the championship to return to the Sepang circuit near Kuala Lumpur for the first time since 2017, where drivers will face challenging conditions as temperatures at the venue have prompted officials to declare the meeting a heat-hazard race.

The stakes are particularly high for the championship contenders. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli currently holds a commanding 76-point advantage at the top of the standings, and the question remains whether he can extend that lead or if his teammate George Russell can build momentum following his victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend.

Several drivers face grid penalties for tomorrow's race after exceeding the permitted number of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) allowed across the season. Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad, and Franco Colapinto will all be penalised on the grid. Colapinto's situation is particularly complicated, as he already carries a five-place penalty stemming from his collision with Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Following that incident, Norris had called for a one-race ban for Colapinto and made comments suggesting some drivers "shouldn't be there" in Formula One, though he has since apologised for those remarks.

First qualifying session (Q1) begins at 9am BST, 4pm local time, 6pm AEST.
