Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli looks up and clenches his fist in celebration after winning the US Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at the United States Grand Prix on 25 October, winning the race and moving within a single victory of clinching his first world championship. According to BBC Sport, the 20-year-old Italian Mercedes driver finished ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, extending his lead over team-mate George Russell to 123 points with just one race remaining in the season. The Guardian reported that Antonelli's ninth victory of the season leaves him just two points away from becoming the youngest Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari won in 1953.

Antonelli will be crowned champion at the Mexico City Grand Prix next weekend provided he finishes in ninth place or higher, even if his title rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secure victories. This mathematical advantage means the championship is effectively his to lose, with the Italian requiring only a modest result to claim the sport's crown.

The Italian's dominance in Austin mirrored his control throughout the 2026 season, in which he has won nine of the 18 races contested so far. He seized the lead from the opening corner and never relinquished it, building a commanding advantage over his rivals. Formula1.com reported that Antonelli's pole-winning qualifying lap was set at 1:34.035, marking his seventh pole position of the season.

How did Antonelli control the race?

Antonelli's victory was built on a combination of an excellent start and superior strategy execution. Mercedes opted for medium tyres at the start, while Leclerc and Verstappen began on fresh soft compounds. This tyre choice proved decisive, allowing Antonelli to complete the race on a single stop while his rivals required two pit stops, emphasising the gap in performance between the leading Mercedes and its competitors.

By the end of the opening lap, Antonelli had established a lead of more than two seconds over Verstappen and Leclerc, who were engaged in their own battle for second place. From that point forward, no competitor came close to challenging him. He crossed the finish line 16 seconds ahead of Leclerc, underlining the extent of his superiority throughout the 56-lap contest. The strategy split between Mercedes' one-stop approach and the two-stop strategy employed by Red Bull and Ferrari proved to be the defining factor, with Antonelli's fresher tyres in the closing stages allowing him to manage the race with composure.

Reflecting on his performance, Antonelli expressed his satisfaction with the team's execution.

It was a result we needed to be fair, the whole team deserved it all this time working to bring this new package and finally seeing the result is very pleasant. It was a perfect execution of strategy to call the one-stop. Today was a great team effort.
He also acknowledged the championship situation, stating:
We're very close, hopefully we can clinch it soon.

What was the wider race narrative?

Beyond Antonelli's dominant display, the race featured an extended battle between Leclerc and Verstappen for the runner-up position. The two drivers contested second place throughout the event, providing the primary point of interest behind the runaway leader. Verstappen, despite late-race engine-braking problems, mounted a spirited challenge in the final stages with fresher rubber, as did Leclerc, who ultimately secured second place. Motorsport Week's qualifying report noted that Lando Norris qualified sixth, pushing Russell back to seventh, with Oscar Piastri eighth on the grid. Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, with Norris claiming fifth place for McLaren.

Verstappen's frustration with his afternoon was evident, as he struggled with multiple issues.

Yeah, that was terrible. The pace, the wrong tyre, shit pitstop, shit engine braking. Nothing worked.
His comments underscored the contrast between Red Bull's two-stop strategy and Mercedes' superior one-stop execution.

What does this victory mean for Mercedes' season?

The win represents vindication for the Mercedes upgrade package introduced two races earlier in Malaysia. The new specification initially moved the team backwards, but sustained development work has transformed it into a clearly faster configuration than the older design, despite remaining challenging to optimise. Antonelli's commanding victory demonstrates that the engineering work has paid dividends at a crucial stage of the championship battle. The result will be welcomed at Mercedes, as the minor wobble they experienced when introducing the upgrades appears to have been resolved. While the operating window remains narrower than before, the team has successfully addressed the issues and the car now appears to be on a more stable trajectory heading into next season.

Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord praised the team's performance.

It felt like everyone was getting a bit excited but all Kimi could do today is go out and win. Amazing job by everyone on the pit wall and the strategists back at base. What a drive, what a win.

What happens next?

The championship will be decided at the Mexico City Grand Prix next weekend. Antonelli's 123-point advantage over Russell means the title is his to lose, with the mathematical permutations heavily in his favour. The Italian can become the 2026 Formula One world champion with a ninth-place finish or better in Mexico, bringing an end to what has been a dominant season for both driver and team. With nine wins already secured, Antonelli cannot be caught on countback and needs only to finish in the top nine to claim the sport's crown.
