York City have appointed former Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey as their new head coach, one day after sacking title-winning manager Stuart Maynard. Maynard led the Minstermen to promotion as National League champions last season but was relieved of his duties on Sunday because of what the board called a
"difference in direction and vision for the football club".
Who is York City’s new head coach?
Scott Lindsey has been appointed as York City’s new head coach after leaving Crawley Town in March. Lindsey took Crawley up to League One in his first spell in charge in 2024, but his second spell ended after a 10-game winless run in League Two left the club one point above the relegation zone.
York said Lindsey, who has also had stints in charge of Swindon Town and MK Dons, has
"a vast wealth of experience working across the EFL".
Why was Stuart Maynard dismissed?
Maynard was removed from his role after leading York to the National League title with 108 points and ending their 10-year EFL exile. The board said the decision was based on a
"difference in direction and vision for the football club".
Maynard was appointed in August last year after York’s owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla sacked Adam Hinshelwood, who had guided the team to second place in 2024-25 and kept them unbeaten in their first five games.
The move was ultimately justified last season as Maynard led the club to the title with a dramatic last-minute equaliser at Rochdale. Rochdale would otherwise have taken the sole automatic promotion place instead.
What happens next for York?
Lindsey will take charge of his first game as York boss against his former side in an EFL Cup preliminary tie on Monday, 3 August. He will be assisted by Joao Alves, while Gary Elphick, who worked under both Hinshelwood and Maynard, will remain as first team coach.
York begin the League Two season with a home match against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, 15 August.
