Alonso Expresses Desire to Keep Enzo Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez is currently representing Argentina at the World Cup, preparing for the semi-final match against England. New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, unveiled at Stamford Bridge on Monday, has expressed his intention to retain the 25-year-old midfielder at the club.
Fernandez has been linked with a potential move away from Chelsea, including interest from Real Madrid. However, the Spanish club denied pursuing a transfer for the player last week. With no confirmed alternative destinations and a substantial £120 million asking price, Fernandez's future remains uncertain.
When asked if he wanted to keep Fernandez, Alonso responded affirmatively, stating:
"Yes. We have spoken. But, as you can understand, what we said will remain private."
This statement was part of Alonso's first comprehensive press conference since assuming the managerial role at Chelsea, following his departure from Real Madrid in January.
Squad Updates: Nicolas Jackson and Alejandro Garnacho
Alonso also provided updates regarding other players. Striker Nicolas Jackson is set to rejoin the squad for at least the club's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia after Bayern Munich opted not to make his loan move permanent.
"Nico Jackson is joining the tour in Asia and we are looking forward to him working with us," Alonso said.
Regarding winger Alejandro Garnacho, Alonso revealed that the player has not returned to training since Alonso began his tenure last Thursday. There is an agreement for Garnacho to remain away from the first-team squad while he pursues a transfer, with Italian club Roma reportedly among the interested parties.
"There is interest in him from other clubs. Hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for everyone," Alonso added.
Alonso's Ambitions and Club Vision
Alonso outlined his objectives for the upcoming season, emphasizing the goal of qualifying for European competition. He expressed gratitude towards the club's sporting directors and owners for entrusting him with the managerial position.
"I want to enjoy it, be part of this club and work with the sporting directors. It is a club with great potential. We need to make the right decisions, but we have a strong base to build on. We need to build on this foundation to be successful on the pitch."
