The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has distributed £49.6m to its member clubs over the past year, marking the highest payout in the organisation's history.
The distribution represents an increase of £7.6m compared to the previous year, equivalent to an 18% rise. Revenue streams driving this growth encompass broadcasting agreements, licensing arrangements, match data sales and sponsorship commitments.
Chief executive Neil Doncaster highlighted the significance of the achievement in a competitive global market.
"In an increasingly competitive international rights market, these results are testament to the enduring attraction of the SPFL,"he stated.
"These are by far the strongest financial results in the SPFL's history, with turnover and total group distributions both surpassing the records set last year, and we are determined to maintain that momentum."
What drove the record financial performance?
Multiple revenue channels contributed to the exceptional results. Broadcasting deals formed the primary source of income, supplemented by licensing fees, data rights and commercial sponsorship agreements. The combination of these income streams enabled the league to surpass its previous financial benchmarks.
How are Scottish football attendances performing?
Match-day attendance figures demonstrate sustained fan engagement across the league. Scottish Premiership stadiums attracted over four million spectators during the 2025-26 season, the first time this threshold has been exceeded. This attendance level reflects the continued popularity of top-flight Scottish football.
Broader engagement metrics reveal substantial viewership across the Scottish football pyramid. Data compiled by Uefa indicated that approximately six million Scottish supporters attended men's matches during the 2025-26 campaign. This figure comprises 900,000 attendees at lower league matches, 200,000 at domestic cup competitions and 800,000 at European fixtures.
Why does attendance matter alongside broadcasting revenue?
The balance between broadcast income and in-stadium attendance remains strategically important for the league's positioning. Doncaster emphasised this dual focus:
"Successfully balancing broadcast revenue with match-day attendances and the unique atmosphere created within packed stadia is central to the SPFL being recognised widely as one of the most intense, compelling, and emotive sporting competitions in the world."
Scottish football maintains a distinctive position in European football, with per capita attendance figures among the continent's highest. The combination of strong broadcasting partnerships and robust stadium attendance underpins the league's international appeal and financial sustainability.
