Wrexham midfielder Ben Sheaf made his first appearance of the season in the club's 2-1 home victory over Southampton, describing the moment as emotionally significant after spending seven months sidelined by multiple injuries.

The 28-year-old started the match for the first time since February, having recovered from a combination of shoulder, calf and knee injuries that kept him out of pre-season and the opening weeks of the campaign. According to the club's official records, the coaching staff had carefully planned his route back to full match fitness before he returned to contention in the squad for the West Ham United fixture.

I'm really pleased. I was a bit emotional in a way, being back out there. It's been a while. I feel like it's been about seven months since I played a proper game.

Sheaf played 65 minutes against the Saints before being withdrawn, with Matty James replacing him as manager Phil Parkinson's team secured their first home victory of the season. The midfielder came on as a substitute in Wrexham's final match of the previous campaign against Middlesbrough, but that brief appearance did not constitute a full competitive outing.

I came on against Middlesbrough for the last game of the season, but since then it's probably around February time, so I'm really pleased to get out there and obviously it's a great result.

Keven Schlotterbeck's 89th-minute own goal and Kieffer Moore's first-half header secured the victory, delivering a powerful response to Wrexham's 6-0 defeat at West Ham United eight days earlier. Southampton had equalised through James Ward-Prowse's strike shortly after half-time at the Racecourse Ground, but Wrexham held firm to claim all three points despite their opponents creating numerous chances.

How difficult was the mental recovery?

Sheaf identified the psychological aspect of his rehabilitation as more challenging than the physical demands of returning to match action. Having trained consistently during his absence, the midfielder explained that the mental hurdle of proving his fitness in a competitive environment proved the greater test.

Probably the mental side is the biggest part. Physically, I've been training for a while but it's that mental factor. You want to just get involved in the game and play a game to know you can do it again.

I was really happy to get through the game, to get through 60 minutes and I'm pleased the boys managed to scrape the win in the end.

What does Sheaf say about team character?

The midfielder felt his teammates demonstrated crucial character in bouncing back from the heavy defeat at West Ham, a result that had placed the club under considerable pressure heading into the Southampton fixture. Wrexham had struggled to accumulate points in the matches following that loss, making the response at home all the more significant.

We've been under some pressure since that West Ham game. We've probably not picked up as many points as we'd have liked as a group, but I think we just showed real good character today. We weren't at our absolute best going forward but I think we did the basics well, showed good character and I'm really pleased with the result and how we handled the game.

What is Sheaf's fitness outlook?

Despite his encouraging performance, the former Coventry City player acknowledged he remains some distance from his peak physical condition. He indicated that several more competitive matches would be required before he reaches full sharpness, though he took encouragement from his display against Southampton.

I'll almost treat it like a mini pre-season. It'll look a bit different to what the other lads will do because they've had proper match minutes. I still think I've definitely got a bit to go. I'm sure it'll be a good few more games until I'm really firing and feeling fit. But I felt like I did OK today [against Southampton]. There's still lots for me to get better at, but I've got to take the positives because, like I say, it's been a while.

The extended international break will provide Sheaf with additional time to work his way back to full match fitness. According to the confirmed starting lineup, Sheaf wore the number 18 shirt alongside Anthony Patterson, Zak Vyner, Dominic Hyam, Callum Doyle, Issa Kabore, Ben Whiteman, Jacques Ekomie, Josh Windass and Callum O'Hare in the Southampton match.

What comes next for Wrexham?

Wrexham's next Championship fixture after the Southampton victory was scheduled for 27 September 2026, when the club travelled to face Norwich City. The three-week international window will give Sheaf time to continue his gradual build-up to full competitive readiness, with the midfielder treating the period as an extended preparation phase rather than standard rest time for players with regular match exposure.
