Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a record-breaking career spanning more than two decades. According to BBC Sport, the 41-year-old forward made the announcement via an Instagram video, confirming his departure from the national team.

The forward's international career has been extraordinary by any measure. Since making his debut in August 2003, Ronaldo accumulated 146 goals and 234 caps for Portugal—both all-time world records. His decision to step away marks the conclusion of a journey that fundamentally transformed his life and established him as one of football's greatest players.

Ronaldo's retirement announcement comes following a period of tension within the Portugal camp. He departed the national team's camp in late September after a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus regarding his playing status in an upcoming Nations League fixture against Denmark. The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently issued him a provisional suspension for his departure, though Ronaldo had previously stated he would not retire from international football while accepting the punishment he deserved.

What Ronaldo said about his departure

In his retirement statement, Ronaldo reflected on the emotional weight of his decision.

To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team. I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world.

He emphasised that the choice involved both rational and emotional considerations.

Today the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone—they are also made with the heart.

A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end.

What comes next for Portugal

Ronaldo's retirement removes one of international football's most recognisable figures from the Portugal squad. The team will now move forward under Jorge Jesus's management without their all-time leading goalscorer, marking a significant transition for the national programme as it enters a new era.
