Ugarte Suffers Serious Knee Injury at World Cup
Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has revealed that he endured "the most serious injury a footballer can face" while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.
The club confirmed that the 25-year-old sustained a knee ligament injury during Uruguay's loss to Spain in Guadalajara on Friday.
Ugarte twisted his knee awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the lead-up to Spain's winning goal and was subsequently stretchered off the pitch.
Following the incident, Uruguay's medical team assessed Ugarte on Saturday. He is scheduled to travel to Manchester for further evaluations before Manchester United officials determine the appropriate treatment plan.
Multiple reports from Uruguayan media suggest that Ugarte has suffered a cruciate ligament injury, which typically sidelines players for several months.
On Sunday, Ugarte posted on Instagram, lending credence to these reports.
"Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country's history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my team-mates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life," he stated.
"Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense, and I truly believe that's the case here," he added.
"Without a doubt, when life wants you to stop, it finds a way to let you know.
It's up to me to take the positives from this.
Success in life is about starting again every time you fall."
Despite these indications, Manchester United will await their own medical assessments before confirming the severity of the injury.
A club statement read:
"Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Spain.
Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.
Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."
Ugarte's World Cup and Manchester United Context
Ugarte entered the World Cup aware that he was likely to be showcased, as Manchester United have prioritized strengthening their midfield.
The midfielder, who joined United from Paris St-Germain for £50.8 million in 2024, has yet to meet expectations during his time at Old Trafford. His most recent appearance was as a starter in the Premier League home defeat to Leeds on 13 April.
It was widely anticipated that Ugarte would depart this summer, either permanently or on loan. However, these plans are now uncertain as the club focuses on his recovery and wellbeing.
United's Midfield Reinforcements
Manchester United have made midfield reinforcement a priority this summer, aiming to add two or three new players.
The club has agreed a £35 million deal for Atalanta's Ederson. However, Ederson's medical, initially scheduled before pre-season training starting 9 July, was postponed due to his late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad.
Ederson is expected to undergo his medical after Brazil's campaign concludes, followed by a mandatory three-week rest period before joining training at Carrington.
United had shown interest in Elliot Anderson but withdrew from negotiations due to the high transfer fee and wages demanded by Nottingham Forest.
Discussions with West Ham over Portugal international Mateus Fernandes have yet to result in an agreement on a transfer fee. Tottenham is also reportedly interested in Fernandes.
Additionally, United have rated Bournemouth's Alex Scott, who was among four players traveling with England for their pre-World Cup training camp despite not being selected for Thomas Tuchel's squad. Last summer, Brighton rejected a bid from United for Cameroon international Carlos Baleba.
It remains uncertain whether a prolonged injury to Ugarte will impact Manchester United's transfer budget.
