Liverpool have completed the signing of Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with an option to make the move permanent. The 27-year-old, who can also operate at right-back, joined the Catalan club from Boston River in 2018 and has since become one of their most decorated defenders.
According to reporting from CaughtOffside, the two clubs reached a verbal agreement before Barcelona's sporting director Deco signed off on the switch. Araujo subsequently underwent a medical, which was confirmed to have been completed in footage shared by a national broadcaster's sports team ahead of the formal announcement.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Araujo said he was relishing the challenge of playing for one of English football's most storied clubs.
I'm excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I'm excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I'm very motivated and really up for getting going.
It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take.

How much is the deal worth?
The buy option attached to the loan is reported to be set at €55 million, equivalent to roughly £47.1 million or $63.6 million, according to ESPN. The same report notes that Liverpool have agreed to cover the defender's wages in full for the duration of the loan spell. For Barcelona, offloading Araujo's salary is expected to create around €15 million of financial breathing room, as noted by the Catalan outlet ARA.
Why did Liverpool move for a new centre-back?
Liverpool have spent the summer trying to rebuild their defensive options after France international Ibrahima Konate departed for Real Madrid on a free transfer. The situation was compounded by fitness concerns across the club's other centre-back options, with Joe Gomez, new signing Jeremy Jacquet and Italian teenager Giovanni Leoni all continuing their recoveries from injury. New head coach Andoni Iraola had already been weighing up defensive reinforcements before the Araujo deal materialised, having previously said he wanted Alexis Mac Allister and Alisson to remain at the club while Conor Bradley recovered from a knee injury.
Jacquet, 21, signed for £60 million from Rennes last month but has yet to feature in any pre-season friendlies because of a minor knee problem. Iraola told LFCTV that the Frenchman "should be fine" to be included for Liverpool's double-header against Como. In the meantime, the manager paired 35-year-old captain Virgil van Dijk with Austrian teenager Ifeanyi Ndukwe in central defence during the 3-2 friendly defeat by Monaco at Anfield. Ndukwe, who stands at 6ft 6in (1.98m), joined Liverpool this summer from Austria Vienna and has impressed in pre-season, but he cannot be used this campaign because he does not yet qualify for a UK work permit.

Araujo has made more than 200 appearances for Barcelona, helping the club win three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. He was handed the captaincy in January following goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's loan departure, though his first-team opportunities became increasingly limited under manager Hansi Flick, who arrived in May 2024 and favoured the central pairing of Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi.
Spanish football commentator Alvaro Romeo described Araujo's peak form from three years ago in striking terms.
He was phenomenal in defence and the best defender in La Liga by far.
Romeo added that injuries and lapses in concentration had affected the defender's recent form, but suggested a recovery was possible.
But then after he got injuries, a little bit of absent-mindedness, in some moments he lost concentration. If he can regain that, which is not impossible in my opinion, then he's going to be a very good asset for Liverpool.
In December, Araujo was granted an indefinite leave of absence by Barcelona after requesting time away from the club, a decision that followed his sending off in a Champions League defeat by Chelsea. He later returned to training in January and scored on his first start back, in a Copa del Rey quarter-final win at Albacete. Speaking to the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo in February, he opened up about the toll the period had taken on him.

Araujo remains under contract at the Nou Camp until 2031, though he made only 11 league starts last season as Barcelona were crowned Spanish champions for the 29th time. He made his international debut for Uruguay in 2020 and has since won 27 caps, including a place in Marcelo Bielsa's squad at this summer's World Cup, although he did not feature in the tournament.
Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, Araujo's international team-mate, welcomed the move on social media, writing that his compatriot was joining a "great club" and adding a message about the atmosphere awaiting him at Anfield.
