National League club Gateshead has failed to pay players and staff their September wages, adding to mounting difficulties at the struggling Tyneside outfit.
The club currently sits at the bottom of the league standings and has endured a dire recent run, losing their last five consecutive matches. During this period, they have conceded 16 goals while managing to score just once, highlighting severe defensive and attacking problems.
The wage payment failure comes shortly after a significant development in the club's ownership structure. Earlier this week, board member Mark Nellist stepped down from his position and withdrew his financial backing for the organisation. In explaining his decision, Nellist stated that the club was
not heading in the direction I would have liked or hoped for.
Despite the challenging circumstances, interim chairman Graham Wood expressed optimism about the club's immediate future. He outlined the club's response to Nellist's withdrawal of support and indicated that progress was being made on alternative funding arrangements.
Following Mark Nellist's sudden decision to withdraw his funding support for the club we have been fully focused on seeking new investment, Wood said.
Significant progress has been made in the past 24 hours and we are hopeful of making an announcement in the next day or so.
As part of efforts to facilitate the search for new investment, Nellist has agreed to make his shareholding available for acquisition at a nominal price, according to Wood's statement.
What's next for Gateshead?
The club, now in their fifth season competing in the National League following their earlier promotion, will attempt to return to winning ways when they host Worthing at home on Saturday. Manager Lee Cattermole will be seeking to halt the team's poor form and begin climbing away from the bottom of the table.
