Quevin Castro, a former West Bromwich Albion midfielder, has died at age 25 following a collapse during a pre-season friendly match in Portugal on Saturday. Castro fell to the ground in the first half of Real Sport Clube's fixture against top-flight Estrela da Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira, north of Lisbon.

According to reports from the Portuguese players' union, Castro suffered cardiorespiratory arrest during the match. Medical personnel, including a doctor from Estrela da Amadora, provided emergency treatment on the pitch using a defibrillator before Castro was transported to hospital, where his death was subsequently confirmed.

The Lisbon Football Association released a statement describing the incident as tragic. Real Sport Clube, where Castro was playing at the time of his death, released a tribute statement honouring the midfielder.

Castro's Career Path

Castro began his professional journey through youth academies before joining West Brom in 2021. He made his competitive debut for the club in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal, followed by a second appearance against Swansea in the same season. He subsequently moved on loan to Burton Albion.

Before his time at West Brom, Castro developed through Chelsea's youth system and appeared for numerous English clubs in lower divisions. According to West Brom's official tribute page, his career included spells at York City, King's Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne before he returned to Portugal last summer to join Real Sport Clube.

West Brom's Response and Tribute

West Bromwich Albion expressed devastation at the news of Castro's passing. The club will honour his memory during their Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday, 23 August 2026, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the match at The Hawthorns. Players and staff will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

The match in Portugal was postponed following Castro's collapse, with Estrela da Amadora releasing their own condolence statement in response to the tragedy.
