Fiorentina are negotiating with Manchester United regarding a temporary move for forward Joshua Zirkzee, who is permitted to depart Old Trafford during the current transfer window.

The Dutch international has generated significant interest from multiple European clubs. Discussions between the Serie A outfit and United centre on a season-long loan arrangement, with provisions for a permanent transfer to be negotiated the following summer.

Zirkzee possesses three years remaining on his existing contract and has indicated willingness to join the Florentine club. While officials have not characterised negotiations as advanced, there remains confidence that terms can be finalised ahead of the transfer deadline on 1 September.

Zirkzee's Manchester United tenure

The 25-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Bologna for £36.5m in 2024 after earning Serie A's Under-23 player of the season award for the 2023-24 campaign. He marked his debut with a goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham, but has subsequently struggled to secure consistent first-team opportunities.

Across two seasons at the club, Zirkzee has accumulated 75 appearances but managed only 27 starts. During the 2025-26 campaign, he featured in just five Premier League matches. His overall tally stands at nine goals across all competitions for United.

Serie A experience

Zirkzee brings established familiarity with Italian football, having previously represented both Parma and Bologna in Serie A before his move to England. This background suggests he may adapt readily to Fiorentina's tactical approach and league demands.

The proposed loan arrangement reflects a broader pattern of transfer activity across European football. Earlier in August, Juventus had also expressed interest in acquiring Zirkzee on loan, indicating the forward's appeal to multiple top-tier Italian clubs seeking attacking reinforcement.

What happens next

Negotiations are expected to intensify as the 1 September deadline approaches. Should an agreement materialise, Zirkzee would join Fiorentina on temporary terms with the possibility of converting the arrangement into a permanent deal during the subsequent transfer window, providing both parties with flexibility regarding the long-term commitment.
