Bellamy to Stay with Wales After Burnley Move Falls Through

Craig Bellamy, who earned 78 caps for Wales, will continue as the Wales national team manager following the collapse of a proposed move to Championship club Burnley.

Burnley had approached the Football Association of Wales (FAW) with the intention of appointing Bellamy as the successor to Scott Parker, who was recently sacked. The 46-year-old held discussions with the Lancashire-based club, but the potential transfer has now broken down.

The failure of the negotiations is understood not to be related to compensation issues involving the FAW. Instead, disagreements reportedly arose over arrangements concerning Bellamy's backroom staff joining him at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, former Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Rob Edwards, who was among the candidates to replace Bellamy as Wales manager, remains a contender for the Burnley position. Edwards left Wolves earlier this month and is still being considered by the Clarets.

Bellamy previously served as a coach under Vincent Kompany at Burnley between 2022 and 2024 and briefly held the role of caretaker manager during that period.

disclosed on 30 April that Bellamy was a leading candidate to replace Parker following his dismissal.

The former forward, who played for Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham, was appointed Wales manager in 2024. Under his leadership, Wales failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shoot-out in Cardiff.

Bellamy's contract with Wales extends until 2028, encompassing the European Championships scheduled to be hosted across England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland.
