Federico Chiesa says he is only "thinking about Liverpool" despite ongoing speculation about his future. The Italian forward scored in Liverpool's first friendly of the Andoni Iraola era on Saturday, when they beat Sunderland 4-2, and said he remains focused on proving himself at Anfield.
Across two seasons under Arne Slot, Chiesa has started one Premier League match and scored five goals in 50 appearances in all competitions. The 28-year-old joined Liverpool from Juventus in a £12.5m deal in 2024 and is contracted until 2028.
In June, Chiesa told
"If I don't find consistency in the Premier League, I'll have to look elsewhere."
What did Chiesa say after scoring against Sunderland?
Chiesa said he is happy at Liverpool and is currently focused only on the club. He spoke after scoring in the 4-2 friendly win over Sunderland on Saturday, which came in Liverpool's first match of the Andoni Iraola era.
"Right now, at the moment, I am happy here at Liverpool. I love the club, I love the fans, I love everything.
"I am doing the best I can to have a chance here - and then we will see.
"At the minute, the only thing I am thinking about is Liverpool."
Does Chiesa see this as a fresh start under Andoni Iraola?
Chiesa said it is difficult to say whether the change of manager amounts to a fresh start, but added that he is trying to do his best for the new boss. Iraola was appointed in June after Slot's dismissal.
"I don't know - it is difficult to say. It is always a fresh start at the beginning of the year.
"Maybe there have been too many fresh starts. But I don't care, I am trying to do my best for this new manager. Last season under Arne Slot, I was trying to do my best too.
"Last year, I felt ready for a bigger role, then it depended on the coach whether he wanted me to play or not. Of course I wanted to play more but it is what it is.
"The gaffer decided to do so, he had his gameplans, he took his decisions, I have nothing to say about that. It is football. This year, let us say it is a new chapter. There is a new manager and I have to focus on that."
What is Chiesa's situation at Liverpool?
Chiesa's future has been the subject of continued speculation because he has had a limited role since moving to Liverpool from Juventus in 2024. He has scored five goals since joining and has made 50 appearances across all competitions, but only one of those has been a Premier League start.
He remains under contract until 2028, and his latest comments suggest he wants to stay and compete for a bigger role under Iraola while acknowledging that he may have to reassess his position if he cannot find consistency in the Premier League.
