Carpenter Emerges as Chelsea's Attacking Force from Full-Back

Ellie Carpenter has established herself as one of Chelsea's standout performers this season, delivering goals and creative contributions from an unexpected position. The Australian defender has featured in nearly every Women's Super League match for the Blues and has become a crucial attacking threat, scoring multiple goals from full-back and wing-back roles while maintaining her defensive responsibilities.

According to BBC Sport, when Chelsea faced Roma in the Champions League and needed a breakthrough at half-time, manager Sonia Bompastor made an unconventional decision to introduce a defender rather than a striker. Carpenter responded by scoring within six minutes, helping Chelsea secure a 2-0 victory and demonstrating why her manager's tactical instinct proved sound.

Bompastor reflected on the moment, explaining her reasoning to her technical staff:

I made the final decision and someone in my technical staff said: 'But we need to score, and you are bringing on a defensive player?' We laughed after the game because I said: 'Right now, she's scoring a lot of goals, so I don't know if she's a more defensive or attacking player!'
The head coach added that she was confident Carpenter would create opportunities in the second half, a belief that has been vindicated throughout the campaign.

Chelsea remain unbeaten at the top of the Women's Super League table, having conceded only four goals—fewer than any other WSL side. This defensive solidity has been built on a back-three system with Carpenter operating as a right wing-back, allowing Lucy Bronze to move inside while the Australian provides attacking width.

How has Carpenter's output compared to other attacking players?

Carpenter has started all but one of Chelsea's WSL matches and has netted four goals from her full-back position, an exceptional return for a defender. In the 6-0 victory over Charlton on 2 November, she scored in the 13th minute, won three tackles—the most of any Chelsea player that day—and made 12 ball recoveries. According to Chelsea's official update, Carpenter has now scored five goals this season, already surpassing her three-goal total from the entire previous campaign.

Her creative output has been equally impressive. Only Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp and Tottenham's Drew Spence have created more chances from open play in the WSL than Carpenter, who has set up one goal while creating 19 chances overall. In terms of penetration, only Khadija Shaw, Hemp and Victoria Pelova have had more touches in the opposition box than Carpenter's 56 this season.

Former England striker Ellen White praised Carpenter's all-around contribution on the Women's Football Weekly podcast, saying:

She has been brilliant this season and she has that attacking prowess. She has comfort behind her because she has trust in the other defenders and midfielders to give her the licence to go forward. I love her celebrations too! Opposition [teams] target players who are most prolific, but Chelsea have four or five who can score from anywhere on the pitch.

What has improved in Carpenter's game?

Carpenter arrived at Chelsea from Lyon in 2025, where she had previously worked with Bompastor and won the Champions League together in 2022. She was already known as an attacking full-back, but a regular criticism during her first season in the WSL was that her crossing could be wasteful. That weakness has been addressed this campaign, with Bompastor crediting the 26-year-old's technical development.

Carpenter has now played 141 successful passes in the final third, the most by any Chelsea player, and has demonstrated improved delivery from both feet. Reports indicate that across all competitions, Carpenter has scored five goals in 13 appearances this season compared with three goals in 29 appearances last season, a dramatic improvement in efficiency.

Bompastor highlighted the breadth of Carpenter's development:

Ellie is performing at a really good level. She has goals from her left foot too which is unusual. She is able to impact the game. The way we want to play as a team, she is really important out of possession and in possession. In possession, she always has the mindset and mentality to go forward. She has a lot of pace and is improving a lot in terms of her technical aspects. She is now able to deliver really good crosses, to be in the box and be clinical to score goals. I'm not sure she can have a bigger impact than what she is right now.

Despite her attacking contributions, Carpenter has not neglected her defensive duties. She ranks second in the Chelsea squad for successful tackles made, demonstrating that her forward runs and box involvement have not compromised her ability to shield the defence.

What are Carpenter's key statistics this season?

Carpenter's impact across multiple metrics underscores her importance to Chelsea's campaign. According to Chelsea's official records, she has led Chelsea outfield players in big chances created with seven, while also leading in touches in the opposition box (56), possession won (46) and possession won in the final third (10). She ranks second for expected assists (2.79) and chances created (19), placing her among the most creative players in the squad despite her defensive starting position.

What fixtures lie ahead for Chelsea?

Chelsea's next WSL challenge comes against Everton on 7 November at 12:45pm, followed by a crucial encounter with Manchester City on 14 November at 1:30pm. The Blues then travel to Liverpool on 21 November, also scheduled for 12:45pm. These matches will provide further opportunities for Carpenter to continue her impressive form and help Chelsea maintain their unbeaten record at the top of the table.
