Barcelona has been handed a €602 (£503) fine by Spain's football association following a complaint from Atletico Madrid regarding the club's contact with striker Julian Alvarez without proper notification. According to BBC Sport, Atletico accused Barcelona of approaching the Argentina international in breach of regulatory requirements, though the 26-year-old ultimately remained at the Madrid club with a contract extending to June 2030.

The disciplinary action stems from Barcelona's undisclosed negotiations with Alvarez during the summer transfer window. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish football federation's regulations require any club seeking to sign a contracted player to notify that player's current club in writing before beginning negotiations. The RFEF imposed the fine under Article 133, which classifies failure to meet such regulatory obligations as a minor offense, with €602 representing the maximum penalty available under that provision.

Atletico filed its complaint with the RFEF in June, prompting the federation to open extraordinary disciplinary proceedings in late July. The Madrid club also escalated the matter to FIFA, but football's governing body determined it lacked jurisdiction over the case and declined to intervene.

Alvarez's summer comments about wanting to fulfil his Barcelona dream intensified tensions with Atletico's fanbase. During an interview, he expressed his desire to play for the Catalan club, triggering widespread disapproval from supporters who had backed him since his arrival from Manchester City in August 2024. The 26-year-old was frequently booed during matches this season as a result of those remarks.

His performance on the pitch, however, has begun to win back some supporters. After scoring the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday—a victory that brought Atletico within two points of leaders Barcelona—Alvarez received a standing ovation from sections of the crowd. He seized the moment to address the controversy directly.

It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry too. Especially given how they've supported me since I arrived.

Since joining Atletico from Manchester City on a six-year deal valued at up to £81.5 million, Alvarez has recorded 51 goals in 115 appearances for the Spanish side. At City, he had scored 36 times across 103 games before his transfer.

Barcelona's Response and Appeal Plans

Rather than accepting the sanction, Barcelona has signalled its intention to challenge the decision. According to Marca, the club plans to appeal the RFEF fine and has stated it will not pay the penalty, arguing that it acted properly throughout the process. Barcelona views the amount as relatively insignificant but objects to the sanction on principle, contending that its conduct did not violate the federation's rules.

Historical Context and Precedent

This case echoes a previous dispute involving Barcelona and Atletico. The clubs clashed in 2019 over the Antoine Griezmann transfer saga, and that earlier complaint is being cited as a precedent in the current Alvarez matter. The pattern suggests ongoing tension between the two clubs over transfer procedures and player recruitment practices.
