Eighteen-year-old Italian defender Honest Ahanor will become a Chelsea player next summer, but will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Crystal Palace. The Blues have secured the Atalanta left-back in a deal valued at up to £40m, though the transfer structure reflects an innovative approach to navigating Premier League regulations.

The transfer was structured to allow Ahanor to develop in English football before moving to Stamford Bridge. According to transfer reports, the agreed fee stands at €48 million, with the loan arrangement designed to ease his transition to the Premier League.
How did Chelsea identify Ahanor?
Chelsea's interest in the teenager emerged after the club signed right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta in July. The Blues identified Ahanor as a prospect with significant potential and moved to secure him before other top European clubs could act.
Ahanor joined Atalanta from Genoa on a three-year contract last summer for a reported fee of €16m plus €4m in add-ons. The left-footed defender quickly established himself as a regular in Serie A, making 28 appearances during the 2025-26 season. He also featured in the Champions League, making his debut in a 2-1 victory against Club Brugge in September 2025.
His performances earned recognition at international level when Italy called him up for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece in May 2026.
Why the unusual loan arrangement?
The transfer structure represents a creative solution to Premier League loan restrictions. Under league rules, clubs may loan only one player to another club in the same division. Chelsea's loan slot is already occupied by centre-back Axel Disasi, who joined Palace on a £3m loan deal after the club signed Maxence Lacroix from Palace for £52m in July.
By having Atalanta loan Ahanor directly to Palace while Chelsea completes the permanent purchase in 2027, all parties circumvent the single-loan restriction. This arrangement works because Ahanor's contract with Atalanta extends until June 2028, allowing the Italian club to retain ownership during the loan period.
Ahanor achieved the unusual distinction of being announced by two Premier League clubs in a single day, featuring in separate photoshoots wearing both Crystal Palace and Chelsea kit.
Chelsea's history of regulatory innovation
The deal reflects Chelsea's broader pattern of seeking creative approaches to recruitment and financial compliance. Separately, Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has joined German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in a deal worth £14.6m including add-ons. The 20-year-old, who signed for Chelsea from Barcelona in July 2024, made 29 first-team appearances for the Blues, scoring eight goals.
According to German football reports, Guiu's contract with Leipzig is expected to run until 2031, providing the Bundesliga club with a long-term investment in the young striker's development.
