The North West 200 will shift back by one week in 2027 and restore its traditional schedule, with opening practice sessions commencing on Tuesday, 11 May. This adjustment avoids scheduling conflicts with Northern Ireland Assembly and local council elections, which are set for Thursday, 6 May 2027.
Under the revised timetable, qualifying and racing will unfold across three days: first qualifying on Tuesday, 11 May; second qualifying and the opening three races on Thursday, 13 May; and the remaining six races on Saturday, 15 May. Road closures will begin at 09:00 BST each day. According to the official race schedule, the overall event window spans 10–15 May, though detailed timings remain to be confirmed.
The return to the familiar Tuesday and Thursday structure marks a significant shift from recent years. Opening practice had been scheduled for Wednesday during 2024, 2025 and 2026 to accommodate riders and teams competing in the traditional May Day weekend British Superbike championship at Oulton Park. Event Director Mervyn Whyte explained the reasoning behind the change, stating that consultation with competitors revealed strong support for reverting to the established format.
We talked to a number of teams and competitors when we were across at the recent BSB round at Oulton Park, to find out what their thoughts were, and every one of them was more than pleased to go back to the Tuesday and Thursday. It's less issues, less problems, it's good for them, and it's good for the officials running the event because we now have a day in between. It will give us a longer race week festival and for us it's the right result.
Organisers believe the restored schedule will strengthen the festival atmosphere surrounding the event and the north coast region. The additional day between qualifying and racing provides logistical benefits for teams and officials alike.
Why does the schedule matter for competitors?
The Tuesday-Thursday format reduces operational challenges for teams juggling multiple events. Riders and crews no longer face the compressed timeline of Wednesday opening practice, which had been introduced to bridge the gap between Oulton Park's May Day weekend fixture and the North West 200. The revised dates allow teams to travel and prepare more effectively, while officials gain breathing room between sessions to manage the iconic Triangle circuit.
Sponsorship and broadcast commitments secured
Race organisers have announced an extension to their title sponsorship partnership with Briggs Equipment, which will now continue through the event's centenary celebrations. This long-term commitment aligns with a recent broadcast partnership agreement that will carry coverage through 2029, the year of the North West 200's landmark 100th anniversary.
The 2026 edition of the event featured top competitors including Glenn Irwin and Storm Stacey in Superbike action. According to the 2026 results, Irwin claimed victory in the Briggs Equipment Superbike race, while Stacey won the Merrow Hotel & Spa Superbike race. Stacey also received recognition at the awards ceremony, earning both Best Competitor and Best Newcomer honours, with Honda named Team of the Year and Josh Brookes selected as Best Overseas Competitor.
