Joe Root has reclaimed the England Test captaincy ahead of the opening match against Pakistan at Headingley, Leeds, insisting he has no intention of dismantling the approach established by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. The five-day match, the first of a three-Test series, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, according to Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
The contest marks the first Test since Stokes stepped away from international cricket and McCullum departed his red-ball coaching role, leaving Root to navigate questions about how his side will fill the void left by two of the most influential figures in England's recent Test history.
Root acknowledged the scale of the challenge but urged his team to stay focused on the present rather than dwelling on the past six months or looking too far ahead.
It's a big void to fill and someone that's been ever present for the best part of 15 years, so clearly it's been different [not having him around]. One thing I think is really important for all of us is we don't get too stuck in the last six months and we don't get too caught up in the next six months.
We've got a unique series that we find ourselves in, and we've got to be very present throughout the whole of it, and understand the different challenges that Pakistan present us.
Could Ben Stokes return to the side?
Root declined to speculate on whether Stokes might make a comeback, deflecting the question back to the player himself.
Who knows? That's a question for Ben. I just said we need to look after the here and now and that's this series.
How is Root approaching the coaching transition?
Root said he has remained in close touch with the incoming coaching setup, though the new appointment will not officially begin work until after the Pakistan series concludes, with Marcus Trescothick overseeing matters in the interim.
I don't think there's a huge amount that we need to change. It's small things that will make a big difference. It's not about ripping it up. It's about keeping a lot of the good stuff that we've been doing for a period of time and that Ben and Baz built for a long while, but making small adjustments that in-game will make a big difference.
I don't believe there is a style, one way of playing Test cricket. I think you've got to be adaptable and you've got to play the situation and the different tempos of the game. It's never the same throughout the five days. There are different challenges and you've got to adjust to the different ebbs and flows of it throughout that period. When you get your opportunity, you want to put teams under pressure and you want to find ways of driving the game forward, but that might look different in different circumstances.
What is Pakistan's team situation ahead of the Test?
Root's opposite number will not be the man originally expected to lead Pakistan into the series. Babar Azam has been ruled out of the opening fixture after injuring his right hand during Pakistan's warm-up match at Beckenham last week, elevating Salman Ali Agha to the captaincy at Headingley in his absence. According to Geo Super, Babar was struck on the hand by bowler Manny Lumsden during the three-day fixture against a PCC Select XI, having scored just five runs before retiring hurt. The setback is a significant one for a Pakistan side that has not won a Test series away from home since 2023.
Pakistan initially said Babar would sit out the remainder of the warm-up match purely as a precaution, with hopes he would be fit enough to join full practice sessions in Leeds before the Test began, as reported by ESPN. However, according to a later ESPN report, Pakistan's medical staff and selectors had still not confirmed his availability for the first Test even on the day of the match, leaving his status uncertain right up to the toss.
Who will England select for the opening Test?
England have yet to confirm their starting XI, with much of the squad only recently returning from Hundred commitments. Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson remain contenders for inclusion, and both were seen training on Tuesday alongside fellow seam bowling options Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Matthew Fisher, Sam Cook and Ollie Robinson, all of whom are available for Root to choose from.
Dan Lawrence appears set to occupy the number six position, stepping into the role effectively vacated by Stokes. Root was effusive about the 29-year-old's all-round contribution, particularly his off-spin bowling, which he described as underrated.
Dan's been an exceptional player for Surrey throughout the whole season. His numbers are amazing. He's played some brilliant innings and is in great form and I think is a very underrated bowler. So he offers a great amount. Clearly it is a different make-up to the team and a different balance to things, but there's no reason why that can't be successful either.

What is the wider context of this series?
The three-match series forms part of Pakistan's tour of England in 2026, with the second Test scheduled to be played at Lord's from 27 August, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board. Pakistan's preparations included the warm-up fixture against a PCC Select XI in Beckenham, during which Babar sustained his hand injury, as noted by a national broadcaster's report on the warm-up match.
What happens next?
Pakistan were due to hold a practice session in Leeds on Monday, 17 August 2026, in the final days before the series opener, giving Babar a further opportunity to prove his fitness. The first Test itself is set to run from 19 to 23 August 2026 at Headingley, with play each day scheduled to start at 11:00 local time.
