Ellyse Perry and Alice Capsey inspired Birmingham Phoenix to their first win of the women's Hundred with a tense seven-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Edgbaston. Phoenix chased down 145 with one ball to spare, with Capsey making 51 from 29 balls and Perry finishing unbeaten on 68 from 46.
The match was played in front of minority shareholder and England midfielder Jude Bellingham, and the result lifted Phoenix off the bottom of the table and into fifth place after four matches. Welsh Fire slipped to seventh, with one win and three defeats.
How did Phoenix complete the chase?
They recovered from early setbacks to seal the result, after opener Davina Perrin fell just five balls into the chase and Tammy Beaumont failed to make more of a reprieve on 10, when she had earlier been dropped before picking out Heather Graham for 14. Capsey and Perry then put on 86 for the third wicket in a match-changing stand.
Capsey, who had earlier taken two wickets, was caught cheaply at deep mid-wicket by Graham off the 82nd delivery, leaving Phoenix needing 12 runs from the final set after having slipped from needing 24 runs from 19 balls. Perry kept her composure, rotating the strike with Annerie Dercksen before hitting Graham for a six and a four to finish the match.
Capsey and Perry struck a combined 16 fours and two sixes.
What happened in Welsh Fire's innings?
Welsh Fire posted 144-3 from their 100 balls, with tournament leading run-scorer Georgia Voll top-scoring on 78 from 55 balls against her former side. She hit nine fours and two sixes in an innings that featured a 58-run opening stand with Ella McCaughan and a further 35 runs with Sophie Devine.
Devine then added late momentum with a flurry of boundaries in her unbeaten 35 from 19 balls, but Fire were left to regret a slow start after managing only 25 without loss in the powerplay at a run-a-ball pace.
Capsey returned figures of 2-24, while Lauren Filer was the pick of the Phoenix attack, conceding only 15 runs from her 20 deliveries.
