Nottinghamshire's Jack Haynes Scores Ninth First-Class Century
In the Rothesay County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire posted 279 runs on day one, largely thanks to Jack Haynes' ninth first-class century. Haynes scored exactly 100 runs, including twelve boundaries, while Australian seam bowler Fergus O'Neill contributed 59 runs. Glamorgan bowlers Timm van der Gugten and Ryan Hadley each took four wickets, exploiting a pitch that offered assistance.
Glamorgan ended the day at 81 for 4 wickets, with Zain ul Hassan top-scoring at 27. O'Neill took two early wickets in his opening spell, and England paceman Josh Tongue claimed his first wicket of the season. Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson was dismissed two overs before stumps.
During the Nottinghamshire innings, an injury replacement was made when Sean Dickson came in for Ben Kellaway, who reportedly suffered a hip flexor injury while fielding.
Nottinghamshire's Batting Struggles and Recovery
Nottinghamshire's difficulties with the bat began immediately as captain Haseeb Hameed was bowled through the gate by a sharply dipping delivery from van der Gugten, hitting leg stump on the first ball of the day. By the seventh over, the defending champions were 38 for 3, with Ben Slater caught at third slip and England opener Ben Duckett dismissed off a leading edge at mid-off, a catch taken by Andy Gorvin.

Duckett, returning to County Championship cricket after 21 months and under scrutiny following a poor Ashes series, scored 25 runs. Despite his assertive approach, the pitch conditions made batting challenging. Joe Clarke played some elegant shots, including six fours, but was bowled by Gorvin, who delivered a sharp ball.
Kyle Verreynne was caught at point as van der Gugten continued to take wickets, leaving Nottinghamshire at 95 for 5. This deteriorated to 103 for 6 when van der Gugten dismissed Liam Patterson-White with his first ball of the afternoon. Despite the wickets, Nottinghamshire maintained a healthy scoring rate aided by a short boundary on the Bridgford Road side.
Nottinghamshire's deep batting lineup allowed them to recover, with Haynes and O'Neill adding an important 111 runs in 21 overs for the seventh wicket. Though primarily recruited for his bowling, O'Neill demonstrated his batting skills by scoring his second first-class half-century for Nottinghamshire and fifth overall before being dismissed by Gorvin.
Haynes advanced into the 90s, drawing on his experience from four centuries last season to patiently await his milestone. He endured a half-hour wait to reach 100, limited to singles and supported by last-man Dillon Pennington, who defended seven balls before Haynes reached his century by pushing a delivery from Zain ul Hassan down the ground. Haynes was eventually caught at long-off without adding to his score.
Glamorgan's Bowling and Batting Progress
In his first appearance of his second spell at Trent Bridge, O'Neill quickly made an impact with the ball, dismissing both Glamorgan openers in his first 14 balls without conceding a run. Asa Tribe was given out leg before wicket, the ball hitting him on the line of off stump, and Eddie Byrom was caught at first slip.
Kiran Carlson and Zain ul Hassan then consolidated, surviving the next 15 overs without loss. However, as light conditions worsened, England paceman Josh Tongue entered the attack from the Stuart Broad End and dismissed ul Hassan for 27 with just seven deliveries.
With the experienced Colin Ingram at the crease, Carlson aimed to guide Glamorgan to the close without further loss. However, he was caught by Verreynne standing up to Brett Hutton, who took a sharp catch, ending the day with Glamorgan at 81 for 4.
Nottinghamshire earned 1 point for their efforts on day one, while Glamorgan secured 3 points.
