Brooke Guest, who started his career at Lancashire, struck an aggressive unbeaten century to lead Derbyshire to a 44-run victory over Glamorgan in the One Day Cup. Derbyshire posted 315-5 from their 50 overs before bowling Glamorgan out for 271 in 47.3 overs, securing their first win of the campaign.
Youthful Glamorgan suffered a fourth straight defeat after an opening victory, despite half-centuries from Zain Ul Hassan and Alex Horton. Dan Douthwaite was their most successful bowler with 3-66, while Nick Potts took four late wickets for Derbyshire.
How did Derbyshire set up their total?
Derbyshire reached 315-5 after a powerful batting display built around Guest’s 108 not out from 82 balls and Caleb Jewell’s 84. The Australian was recalled for Yousaf Bin Naeem, and his innings helped Derbyshire match exactly their total from last year's fixture at the ground.
Glamorgan, meanwhile, brought back 17-year-old Tom Edwards for Connor O'Riordan and chose to bowl on the picturesque school ground. With a short boundary and a well-manicured outfield, the boundaries began to flow quickly.
Martin Andersson fell lbw for 13 and Harry Came was bowled for a rapid 31, both dismissed by Douthwaite. Derbyshire were 62-2 in the powerplay, and Jewell and Wayne Madsen maintained a similar rate in a stand of 62 before Madsen, who made 39, mistimed a pull off Edwards to mid-wicket.
Jewell reached his fifty in 64 balls, and Guest then accelerated sharply. He lofted a trio of sixes into the crowd on the bank at mid-wicket as the pair added 117 in the middle overs, a record fourth-wicket stand in List A cricket against Glamorgan.
The visitors’ bowling attack, missing six leading options through Hundred calls, injuries and resting, had to focus on containment until Jewell lobbed Ul Hassan to cover. Guest then drove Derbyshire to a powerful finish, ending with five sixes and five fours.
Why did Glamorgan fall short?
Glamorgan made a competitive start through Zain Ul Hassan, who hit 61 in a second half-century in two games since paternity leave, but they lost momentum in the middle overs. Eddie Byrom made 10 before guiding Ben Aitchison to a leaping Anuj Dal at backward point, and Callum Nicholls was lbw to the next ball.
Ul Hassan built a platform in a stand of 59 with Will Smale, but the pair could not accelerate further. Smale made 20 before his favourite ramp shot let him down and the economical Anuj Dal struck the stumps, while Ul Hassan was caught at point attempting to reverse-sweep spinner Jack Morley.
Despite the inexperience of the Welsh line-up, Glamorgan had previously shown resistance through the sixth-wicket pair of teenager Hope-Bell and Horton, who both hit centuries in the victory over Sussex. Their stand of 65 was not enough to turn this match, however, and Hope-Bell holed out to long-on off Potts after a promising 48.
Horton reached his half-century from only 41 balls and briefly kept Glamorgan hopes alive. Douthwaite, who is capable of winning games with powerful striking, was then caught on the boundary off Andersson. Horton hit Potts for a huge straight six, his fourth maximum in a blistering 57-ball innings, before being caught behind next ball to end any lingering doubt.

Dan Douthwaite’s 3-66 was the standout figure in a persistent Glamorgan attack, while Potts produced the decisive late burst for Derbyshire with four wickets. Glamorgan’s bowlers had to cope without six leading options because of Hundred calls, injuries and resting, which left them trying to contain Derbyshire for long stretches.
Derbyshire’s own attack ensured the chase unraveled at key moments. Potts’ late wickets closed out the match as Glamorgan finished on 271, 44 runs short of the target.
