England opener Emilio Gay struck his first century of the tournament to guide Durham to a nine-wicket win at Hampshire. The result lifted Durham to third in the One-Day Cup Group B table, while Middlesex and Leicestershire both moved to the top of their respective groups after key victories on a busy day of fixtures.
Gay finished unbeaten on 104 as Durham boosted their quarter-final hopes, while teenage Jack Nelson top-scored with 76 from 69 balls to help Middlesex hold off Yorkshire and replace them at the top of Group B. There were also wins for Essex against Worcestershire and Derbyshire against Sussex.
Leicestershire Foxes moved four points clear at the top of Group A with a 164-run win over Somerset, leapfrogging Lancashire and Notts Outlaws, who lost to Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Kent respectively. Four teams are now chasing the Foxes, all four points behind with a game in hand on the leaders.
How did Leicestershire go top of Group A?
Leicestershire went top of Group A by beating Somerset by 164 runs after recovering from an early wobble in Leicester. After choosing to bowl first, Somerset had their hosts in trouble at 18-3, but Leicestershire then took control of the contest.
Wicketkeeper Ben Cox top-scored with 89, while Nick Kelly made 60 and Ian Holland added 77 as the Foxes reached 289-8 in their 50 overs.
The chase quickly slipped away from Somerset as they collapsed to 48-5. Late hitting from number 10 JT Langridge, who made 32, lifted the total beyond three figures, but it was only a brief recovery.
Alex Green took the final wicket of Jake Ball to finish with 3-28, and Somerset were bowled out for 125 in 30 overs. That left Leicestershire with a dominant 164-run victory and top spot in Group A.
What happened in Lancashire’s defeat to Northamptonshire?
Northamptonshire beat Lancashire by 67 runs after posting 347-6 at Northampton. Lancashire had won three successive games to go to the top before the match, but their opponents produced the bigger innings.
Opener Gus Miller hit 115, his first century in this format, while number three Aadi Sharma scored 61 and the pair added 153 together. Captain Nathan McSweeney then made 78 off 59 balls as Northants piled on the runs.
Pakistan leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has claimed 10 wickets in five One-Day Cup fixtures for Northants, then helped to break Lancashire’s response.
Lancashire struggled to find another major partnership and were 180-5 when Marcus Harris fell for 57, the first of four wickets for Chahal. Teenager Joe Moores kept the chase alive with 85 off 59 balls, but when he was run out after a mix-up with captain George Balderson, the game was effectively over.
They were eventually bowled out for 280 in the 46th over as Northants sealed a convincing win.
How did Kent beat Notts Outlaws?
Kent defeated Notts Outlaws by five wickets at Beckenham after chasing down 294-9 with four balls to spare. Notts had opted to bat first and were led by a maiden List-A century from opener Ben Martindale, who made 101.
After Martindale was dismissed, South Africa wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne accelerated the scoring with 71 and Lyndon James added 43, helping Notts reach 293-9 in their allotted overs. Medium pacer Ekansh Singh returned Kent’s best bowling figures with 4-40.
In reply, Kent captain Daniel Bell-Drummond made 44 to give his side an early push. A third-wicket stand of 115 between Sam Northeast, who scored 78, and Harry Finch put the home side in control.
Finch went for 88 in the 45th over with 38 still required, but Chris Benjamin then played the decisive innings, finishing on 55 not out from 34 balls. With 21 needed from two overs, he and Grant Stewart took 19 from James’ penultimate over before the chase was completed with four balls remaining.
The win left Kent level on points with Lancashire and Surrey in the race for a top-three place and a spot in the knockout games.
What happened at Warwickshire versus Gloucestershire?
Warwickshire beat Gloucestershire by six wickets at Rugby School in a meeting between two teams that had each won only one game at the halfway stage. Gloucestershire’s Ollie Price posted a career-best 122, sharing stands of 90 with captain Cameron Bancroft, who made 46, and 98 with Joseph Eckland, who scored 43.
From 203-2, however, Gloucestershire were dragged back in by Warwickshire, with Jordan Thompson taking two wickets in two balls as they slipped to 271-9.
Warwickshire captain Rob Yates then led the chase with a List-A best 132 off 123 balls, including six sixes, to put the target beyond reach.
After a third-wicket partnership of 147 with Vansh Jani, Yates was dismissed, but Jani remained unbeaten on 66 as Warwickshire completed the win with eight overs to spare.
How did Middlesex regain control of Group B?
Middlesex moved top of Group B after beating Yorkshire at Lord’s. Openers Josh de Caires and Nathan Fernandes put on 74 before both were dismissed by Ben Cliff, who took three wickets in seven balls as Middlesex slipped to 121-5.
England Under-19 international Jack Nelson then gave the innings momentum with a fearless 76 from 69 balls. He scored freely, including 17 from one Jack White over, and shared a 94-run stand with Zafar Gohar.
Nelson was eventually caught reverse paddling to third man off George Hill, who finished with 3-40, and Cliff ended with 4-39 as Middlesex were bowled out with two overs unused. Yorkshire’s reply began badly when both openers fell cheaply.
Teenager Will Bennison steadied the innings with 63 from 96 balls, his maiden half-century, and shared an 85-run stand with James Wharton before Gohar struck in successive deliveries.
Noah Cornwell kept the pressure on with 3-35, and although Dom Bess stayed in the chase with 59 from 75 balls, he was last out, caught in the deep as Yorkshire were dismissed for 211.
How did Durham beat Hampshire?
Durham cruised to a nine-wicket win over Hampshire after chasing 247 with 9.3 overs to spare. Hampshire looked on course for a much larger total when Toby Albert made 89 from 108 balls and Jake Lehmann scored 60 from 87, adding 126 for the third wicket to steer the hosts to 176-2.
Durham fought back through Shafiqullah Ghafari, who took 3-41, and Will Rhodes, whose six-over spell produced 3-29, to dismiss Hampshire for 246. Durham then made short work of the target.
Graham Clark scored 68 from 58 balls and shared a century opening partnership with Emilio Gay, who then linked up with Ollie Robinson, who finished unbeaten on 64 from 65 balls. Gay reached his hundred by smashing Tom Prest for six to seal the win in style.
How did Essex and Derbyshire finish the day?
Essex beat Worcestershire at Chelmsford after setting a mammoth target of 377-5. Noah Thain fell short of a third consecutive hundred but made 75 from 68 balls to give Essex a strong base, before Tom Westley and Matt Critchley added 122 in just 14 overs.
Westley, who was captain for the day, eventually fell for 129 from 104 balls to Fateh Singh, but Critchley stayed unbeaten on 102 from 73 balls as Essex posted their imposing total. Worcestershire were then reduced to 3-2 at the start of their reply.
Worcestershire captain Jake Libby kept his side in contention with 109, while Kashif Ali contributed 51, but Simon Harmer and Mackenzie Jones took three wickets apiece as the visitors were dismissed for 269 in the 42nd over.
Derbyshire also enjoyed a convincing win, beating Sussex at home after a strong batting display and a dominant bowling effort. Harry Came and Martin Andersson gave Derbyshire a fast start by adding 69 in eight overs before captain Wayne Madsen marked his 100th List A game for the club with a century.
Madsen brought up his hundred in the final over of the innings and finished unbeaten on 104 from 96 balls. Ross Whiteley’s brisk 33 from 18 balls helped lift the Falcons to 325-7, while Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe took 3-44.
The Sharks were never able to build any momentum in reply. Left-arm spinner Jack Morley took two wickets in his first over and went on to finish with a career-best 5-28 as Sussex were bowled out for 137 in the 32nd over.
