Ex-England Player Joins Pelsall Cricket Club

Facing a shortage of players ahead of the new cricket season, Dan Pennell, captain of Pelsall Cricket Club's first team, took an unconventional step by sending an Instagram message to a former England international cricketer, inviting him to fill the vacant spot.

The player was Monty Panesar, who boasts an impressive career record including 50 Test matches, 26 one-day internationals, and a T20 international, along with 709 first-class wickets.

This bold outreach quickly yielded results. Within an hour, Pennell received a positive response from Panesar.

"I just didn't expect it to be fair, I was watching the football at home and then this DM came through to me and I was like: 'Wow, is it truly him?'" Pennell said.

"He sent me his number within 20 minutes, and we spoke the next day."

Pelsall Cricket Club had initially anticipated an overseas player from Zimbabwe to join, but visa and border complications delayed his arrival.

When alternative options were exhausted, a friend of Pennell's mentioned that Panesar might not be playing this year.

"I think he was just at a loose end, he had moved to Leicester which is an hour away from us, he'd been playing in the East Anglia league, and it was going to be too far for him to get there," Pennell told the BBC.

Since the announcement, the situation has been described as a "whirlwind."

"We had a players meeting and I broke the news to them and literally they were in shock," Pennell said.

"The look on their faces, they were laughing 15 minutes later, we couldn't believe it."

Monty Panesar's Career and Current Plans

Born in Luton, Panesar began and ended his professional cricket career with Northamptonshire, with periods at Sussex and Essex in between.

He made his England debut against India in 2006, concluding his Test career seven years later during an eight-wicket loss to Australia in Melbourne.

In the previous year, Panesar participated in the International Masters League in India as part of an England Masters team, taking four wickets across five matches.

Pennell is optimistic that Panesar's involvement will attract attention and benefit the team.

"My phone's been mad, it hasn't stopped," Pennell said.

"Hopefully he can stand in the slips and catch us some catches, teach the lads a few things as well.

"It looks at the moment that Monty's signed for the 2026 season, I'm really pleased."
